purchasing handguns online

In Ontario a transfer will be approved without a gun club membership, every other province in Canada you need either a gun club membership or collector status for the transfer to be approved. ATT's are another matter.

Well, if it's like BC - on you're license renewal date - if ya don't belong to a club, they come and get'em (your restricted stuff).

Any one from BC clarify this? Club membership is necessary for a long term ATT, no membership, no LTATT. Owning and possessing a restricted firearm is not under provincial jurisdiction so how can they come and take them away if your no longer a club member? If your license expires that's a different story...

In Ontario if your not a club member getting a short term ATT to shoot your restricted/prohib pistols is easy if you have an invite to a club event. They were quite reasonable about it, gave me plenty of time to get to and from the shoot. A couple of try's on the phone to get through and then done in less then five min.

I see a lot of replies from outside of SK, so I will let you know my experience early this year.

I joined the local gun club before buying my first restricted. I actually went to Frontier Firearms and made my purchase in person but didn't have the time to wait around PA hoping the transfer went through so i payed the extra 15 bucks to have it shipped when the transfer was approved. My thoughts were that it would be approved and I would then take care of my ATT (fax in my club membership at that time) so I could get it to the range. About a week later I call Frontier asking what the hold up is. They weren't sure. Called the CFP. They asked a bunch of boring questions, then told me the CFO has it and it is awaiting approval. Several days later, still no approval so I called CFP again. They told me they just needed a copy of my club membership and the transfer would be done. Faxed it in as fast as I could after hanging up. I called back later that day, it was approved, gun was in the mail that day, in my hands the next. The girl on that call was great, she told me she could see I didn't have an ATT yet and asked if I wanted to take care of that while I was on the phone. Within seconds I had a e-mail with my ATT. As others have stated, it is good from your home to all ranges, smiths or border crossings in SK. The waiting game for the copy of my registration certificate seemed to take forever though. I have made other purchases since, every time since has been the usual story from SK. Very fast transfers. I can't complain at all.

Long story short, I would suggest you become a range member and send that paperwork in as soon as you can so it is on file. I'm sure that will speed the whole process up. But if you have found a gun that is a great deal and don't want to miss out. Buy it and get them to hold it until everything goes through. Gun stores deal with this sort of thing daily. It's part of the joys of our firearms laws.
