First of all, Canada has 1.2 citizens of Ukrainian origin. Largest in the world after Ukraine and Russia. A lot of people care, this is not some rock in a middle of an ocean.
Second, Crimea was taken by military power and FORCED to be a PART of Russia. The "evil United States" and "corrupt shameless West" didn't attain a square inch of land for themselves since the WWII. Neither in Iraq, nor Afghanistan, nor Serbia, Kosovo and all else you can think of never became a part of US or UK or Germany. It is cornerstone of peace after WWII - land boundaries are fixed and no western power aims to attain any land by force.
Third, Ukraine specifically had both peace treaty with Russia respecting the borders but more over after USSR collapse Ukraine had 3rd LARGEST nuclear arsenal and gave away nuclear weaponry for warranties from US, UK and Russia for the security assurance.

This is the only time in history someone ever traded nuclear weapons asking just for peace and security from foreign invasions. Putin wasted all that for a little victory for himself. And West blew it with suckers like Merkel and Obama turning a blind eye.
So no, it does matter a lot and Canada should care a lot. Switzerland will never get into a conflict with Russia over Arctic. We, on the other hand, without a doubt face that possibility. Putin's actions towards other countries are the biggest threat world has ever had since Cuban missile crisis plain and simple.
