Putting my Rem700 on a diet

If it were me, I’d flog the Remington and get a stainless tikka and drop it into a wildcat ultralight. Done and done.

If you go tikka, you can have a 7-08 reamed to 284 win and get two birds stoned at once

This keeps coming up. It’s probably a great idea. Plus, you end up with a SS rifle.

Disregard all the 284 nonsense tho. 😋

I’ve come to the conclusion that if I can’t carry around a 8# rifle, I should stay home.

Its not that I can't carry an 8# rifle, its that I would prefer not to. By all means, I'm carrying it now (well, not NOW, its pretty awkward sitting in my chair with the rifle slung over my shoulder...) and have carried it for the last year plus of hunting seasons... But if I can upgrade the stock (current one I think is a B&C, and its got a pretty fat foreend on it that I'm not a huge fan of) and lose a noteworthy amount of weight, thats a win-win to me.

Its certainly not a BAD idea, but it would cost me a fair bit of money and isn't necessary for me to make the weight I am after. I already reload for 7mm08, and I have a pile of components on hand, so I have no interest in changing calibers especially with the current component shortage/crazy prices. Finding a used left-handed tikka is very much doable, but finding one in 7mm08 is not an easy task (Personally I haven't seen one on the EE in the ~2 years I've been watching for lefty rifles, not that I check every day or anything though).

I hear what your saying.
There is no advantage to shooting a light rifle. I have proven that to myself unfortunately. Blasting sub moa groups on a bench is a poor representation of a lightweight rifles performance in the field. My latest hunting “misses” have been with my lightest gun. Light guns have very little field forgiveness ime.

Would a Tikka T3 LH SS 22-250 selling for 850 be of any value to you?

All you would need is a 7-08 barrel and no go gage.

I'm not looking to get rid of the Remington right now. I would have to sell the Remington to free up money to buy another gun, and that would leave me without a lefty for Spring Bear hunting season. I do have other guns, but they're not ready to roll (one needs a scope, the other isn't sighted in and I don't have a load worked out for it).

Thanks though!

You’re best bang for your buck would be a self finished wildcat w/ flip flop pad, a set of talleys and a smaller leupold. 7-08 is just plain awesome, and the rest of your gun is already dialed in. You will lose more than a pound, and more importantly avoid the rear heavy balance that your B&C stock and short barrel likely causes.

I have a major hard on for light rifles, because I do longer backpack trips and every ounce counts…..but there is a lot to what buckmastr is saying. I think 7 lbs is right where I start to lose shootability, particularly offhand. It’s all about being realistic about your intentions with the rifle and the dollars/ounce ratio.

When did 8lbs with a scope become “heavy”?

A bare 6.5 lb rifle seems to be perfect in my books; I’d call that light

I do own a 5lb rifle though so I too suffer from ultralight insanity

I guess Ruger Americans, Tikkas, savage axis are pretty darn light. At 6.1 lbs I’m a bit surprised we don’t see more lightweight builds on Americans

Soooooo, mate, i went through this last year or so with a Browning Abolt stainless plastic............ i made a thread on it... i think you seen it.

i started off with just a stock standard Abolt, steel QD rings and a zeiss terra 3-9x40........

what i ended up going through was the following...

Barrel fluted
(x5) and cut down to 20 inches (from 22). i did this to aid in the carry in the denser bush around here- not much to do with ballistics in mind, (hindsight is a 308 at 19)
drilled the hecka out of the magazine casings/sides..Drilled holes in the Bolt handle-needs more- and Drilled larger holes in the floor plate..
swapped out to leupold rings rifleman i believe.
swapped out for the vari-x 2-7x33 (older scope an not modern Jam) - i did this for the max hunting ranges are 300m an often much closer, during well lighted times of the day, often not in snotty weather if theres anyway to avoid it :) )

spent about $300 from memory- bought the gun from $600 to $900.....per se.
saved about ####all grams, somewhere in the 400 region i believe.

not the ideal platform to butcher out without major machining, was on a slight budget an its my only actual Left handed gun....

its not kimber light , but its more comfy for me to cart around and doesnt snag up or bother me

^haha my covid belly is jiggling with laughter

Looks like savage makes a lefty 110 ultra lite; if you want to talk “bang for buck” I have no clue how they manage to sell those at the price point they do with the components they include. Probably be cheaper than wildcatting a Tikka with the proceeds of the rem. Comes in 280 ai (hipster cartridge :dancingbanana:) 6.5 prc, 28 nosler and 270 if you’re boring too.

2ish months of spring bear season left; walk or drive seeded logging roads with your “heavy” gun sell it and do a tikka build. Wildcats lead times are not short; you probably won’t have a new stock until fall anyways.

Ounces really don’t mean a whole lot.

I’m finding the opposite. While I’m not looking for a UL Sheep Rig, as I age I’m less inclined to carry around a #8-#10 setup all day long. I usually try to stay in th e”Light” class of around #7-#8Lbs all in if I can.

Savages are great for what their price point is. Having owned three (110Pred, 110 Pred Max-1 and a 116 SS) they were all insanely accurate out of the box. It’s the lack of aftermarket accessories (ie; Stocks) that really hurts their potential. I would’ve bought two of the EE recently if I could ditch the Accustock with a readily and decent replacement.

Yes if it’s a tikka 99% chance he’d be good to go. The challenge there would be finding both a used tikka and take off barrel for less than a new tikka in the desired chambering. All of which assumes he decides to ditch his Remington... ford vs Chevy, people prefer both (even if the Finns do it better)

lbsportinggoods.com/tikka-t3x-lite-7mm-rem-ss-left-hand/

This is the way

Allows you to use some of your components. If you’re willing to spend 800-1250 on recontouring a barrel and finishing or having a stock finished what’s some dies and brass? Do you use 4831 in your 270?

If money is an issue; just buying a tikka and putting talleys and a lighter scope on it is a solution. 7 lbs is not a magical number.

It’s good to have dreams :dancingbanana:
