Are .410 reloads always this filthy? This is after 120-ish rounds of my reloads - 1/2oz. shot going 1250fps ahead of H110. Loads pattern and shoot well, but I’m not too thrilled with how much soot I’m seeing. It cleans up very easily, but my white shooting tuxedo is a mess.

H110 can be dirty on low pressure loads
it is also very finicky in low temps so I am no longer using it in 410

if you are adventurous, try a hotter primer

I use mostly 296, and occasionally H110. There is a bit of soot, but I clean it every time I use it anyway. I've never felt it was a chore to clean, especially a break open.

Maybe a weak or shallow crimp making for a poor burn rate you need to tighten up your hulls either that or your hulls are burned out. What hulls and wad combination are you loading?

I’m using the old Win AA compression formed hulls and Claybuster 410 wads. Load was 14.4gr. H110, making 1250fps with Win 209 primers. Crimps are not all perfect, but pretty close. I had also tested the next powder bushing up, dropping 15.2gr. for 1300fps. Both patterned well and I decided to go with the milder load. But, I’m loading 100 of the 1300fps load to shoot this weekend and see if that makes any difference.

I have another load going 1300fps in the newer HS hulls with Cheddite primers. I might test them to see if they shoot cleaner. I’ve only shot those in my 1100, as my 12ga 725 was piercing Cheddite primers and I don’t want that issue in my .410 725.

I plan to buy some Alliant 410… if it ever comes back into supply.

I use Lil'Gun in the 410 mostly.
I do use 30 grains oh H110 in my 28 gauge load behind a 7/8 oz charge of shot.
It tends to burn a bit dirty , yes, but it develops very good velocity , but in the 410 I much prefer Lil' Gun.

I think the dirty effect is due to leakage of gasses between the primer and case, rather than around the shell case from the mouth back. Are you using old, well used cases? Are the primers tightly fitting into the hulls or loose enough you could pop one out with your fingernail or by tapping the base against a hard surface? Just a thought.

What claybuster wad ? if you are using the HS wads in the old one piece hulls they don't seal very well as they are designed for the HS hull. That may be why you are not getting a clean burn. W296 will give you max velocity and a clean burn but it tends to burn out hulls rather quickly because it burns hot.

My HS hulls are getting tired, and I am starting to see some leakage around the odd primer, so I get some residue in my gun as well. 296/110 is hard on hulls, and I am starting to cull quite a few from my stockpile.

Aha, yes this may be part of my issue. I’ve got the Claybuster CB5050-410HS wads. To my knowledge these are the only .410 wads Claybuster is producing. They do also list them on the bag as a replacement for a bunch of other wads, so I thought I was good. Can you recommend another wad (that is available in this crazy market) that might be better for my older AA compression formed hulls?

WAA41-410 Hummason should still have some original Winchester. The Remington SP410 wad should work if you can find them. I have a lot of the old 410 AA hulls and I also load them with Lujutic fiber wads and 2400 works ok for skeet loads. Most on here wouldn't know what a Lujutic looked like but some of the old farts like myself know what I am talking about and are probably laughing their ass off.
