Q on Ruger single-shots: Did they ever make one chambered in 30 Carbine?

Not as far apart as some might think... but yes, .357 Magnum (a personal favourite of mine) is the more powerful of the two.

........ or be versatile.

I can't imagine for the life of me how a gun like this would be useful for anything other than being odd.

The .30 Carbine does make the 7.62X39 look pretty good though. A better comparison than the .30 Carbine vs .357 might be the .30 Carbine vs .32-20, or perhaps compared to one of the new whiz-bang .32 magnum handgun cartridges.

It might be unusual, but I wouldn't call it odd. How does it lack compared to other cartridges in it's class? While it comes up short against 357 magnum, it still has excellent ballistics, is super easy to load for, and being a 32 cal bullet, it has excellent penetration.

Yeah, I can see myself building one... and yeah, colour case hardening would be part of that equation ;)

You could start out with .30 carbine, have it rechambered to .30/30, then to .308 or maybe .30/40 Krag, then to .30-06, .300 H&H, .300 Wby, and finally .300 RUM. How much more versatile can you get?

Nothing personal, but I think a gun like that is bloody useless. You can't hunt with it anything larger than a coyote, it's not known for accuracy and not a long range shooter. What can you do with it other than blast away at 50yd barn broadsides. I think a 357mag is about the same. It's a plinker that I can do the same with my SKS for a fraction of the price.

Just sayin' .......just my lowly opinion. Please don't hate me! :)

Anyone that knows you can see you building one!

No hate. Just loooooveeeee.

Accuracy from 30 Carbine is based on the 30 M1 Carbine semi-auto, so not a fair statement.
Yes, it's not a long range shooter, we all have plenty of those.
Yes, coyote, and other small pests...

No, I won't be building one (at least not yet)... got too many projects in the mix. Though, I wouldn't mind trying one in an accurate configuration to silence the nay sayers.

Peace.
