Is mounting a 4-9x40mm bushnell scope a good idea for my .300 win mag?

What are some problems I might face?

Thanks for the opinions...

Guessing it's a 3-9X40 ;)

It's what I have on my .308. Why wouldn't it work on a .300 win Mag? Sure the .300 kicks like a mule having PMS... Bushy does put out some decent scopes though. If you try it, it's not like Bushy scopes are uber expensive...

Ask a dealer you trust too. Personally, I'd aim for one of the more rugged, solid bushy's for that rifle.

GOOD LUCK either way.

Decent amount of eye relief, that's how far you can have your eye from the scope and get a proper view through it, varies between scopes, and some of the better ones like Leupold's have more eye relief. If you are shooting a lightweight rifle in 300WM, a scope with not much eye relief, especially at 9x, may catch you in the eye during recoil. Something to consider along with other factors that determine scope quality and price.

Hmm thanks grizzlypeg, I'll be on the lookout for that... what's a decent amount of eye relief for .300 win mag? When I get it I want to make sure it's a good one cause I definitely cannot afford to buy two (but who can? :p)

I was trying to find some hard data on comparisons of eye relief between a Bushnell and Leupold. The Leupold VII for instance in a 3-9x40 has an eye relief of 3.7 to 4.7 inches (high magnification to low magnification). The Bushnell site for the 3-9x40 sportsman simply says 3.5" eye relief. So much for making comparisons. Maybe other sources have better data than the Bushnell website. I'm shooting with a VII on my 300WM. I bought used to save money and get more quality. I too was worried about the reliability of a cheap scope on a 300WM. Savage packages theirs with cheap Simmons scopes, and I hear some work for a while, but most wise shooters swap them out.

Hmm... alright Grizzlypeg. I think I'll do like you did and wait and save a bit before I make my purchase... I don't have a ton of money to throw around right now.

Maybe when I join a shooting club someone there will be able to show me the differences and I can see for myself, first hand...

Thanks a bunch :)

I'm currently researching scopes for my project .338 Win Mag and like Grizzlypeg said; eye relief is definitely something to consider. I have a B&L 3000 (Bushnell 3200) 3-9x40mm on my .270 and you have to watch out that you don't creep on the scope or you'll have a souvenir like my brother. :D In my defense, I warned him repeatedly before he took that one and only shot.

Check out Bushnell's web site; they've introduced a 6500 series scope with 3.9"/100mm worth of eye relief. I'm looking at the 2.5-16 x 42mm or 50mm version. I find the 3-9 is barely adequate even for my .270's long range capabilities. Try punching paper at 300 yards with a 3-9, that target's damn small. :sniper: I hunt wide open areas and always make an attempt to get close, but would hate to pass up a monster because he was 300+ yards out. Also, Bushnell does state that the 3200, 4200 & 6500 series scopes are all built to Magnum recoil-proof construction (tested with 1,000 rounds of 300 Win Mag). Good luck.

I won't be attempting these right away, but what kind of magnification would you recommend for 300/400 yard shots?

Good luck.
Thanks

Trying to hit small bullseyes at 300 yards you might need a lot of magnification, but to hit the vitals of a deer at 300 yards, 6x will do just fine. I wouldn't get carried away with magnification for hunting deer sized game.

I think if you can save up around $250 you can get yourself a used Leupold scope, something like a VXII and rest assured that it will hold up to 300 WM recoil. Its a good place to put your money and it will hold value much better than a say $100 scope you bought new.

ER (eye relief)on most 3200-4200 are 3.3", I also read somwhere on the Bushnell website that they test the 3200 & 4200 on a recoil machine equivilant to a 375 H&H
I had an Elite 3200 3-9x40 w/Firelfly reticle on my
TC Encore 300WM........too short ER, I got one too many kisses. That scope now rests on my Win 88/.308. IMHO I would go for the Nikon line up of scopes.

Thanks for all the help, guys :)

I think I'll start saving for a used leupold... I've heard nothing but good things regarding leupold.

I had a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 on my Encore .50cal ml bbl, one kiss too many for my liking, the scope soon after would not hold a zero. I switched to a Nikon Omega 3-9x40 with constant 5" ER. Clear, bright optics and an awesome "bite free" eye relief got me hooked on Nikon. Last fall I picked a .308 bbl for my Encore and in no time had a Nikon Pro Staff 3-9x40 (3.6" ER) on. My .330Wm bbl is absolutely crying to have a Nikon Monarch 3-12X42 mounted.
