Quality Handgun purchase

Where abouts are you in Alberta? You can go to just about any range and someone will be sure to let you fondle thiers (assuming you have your restricted) There is a shooting range in almost every city or at least within a short drive of one.

I have always wanted a Beretta, however have read some horror stories about QC issues with the newer models.
What issues? Beretta is a great pistol.

I've had a few P226's and M&P's and still have a 92FS and a couple of CZ75's. All were good guns, but I prefer the later 2.

Edit: dont overlook gen4 Glock 17/22 as well

Im going to get flamed hard here but the us army choose it over the 1911 and the sigs........just sayin
I have around 3k rounds through mine allready and not a single problem! My only complaint is the DA trigger. I love a pistol with some heft to it and this thing is great.

When you get it broken in, you'll find you need to replace the locking block, but you have a few thousand more rounds to go. The contract Beretta bought was a good example of how contracts shouldn't be awarded.

OP - take a look at a Gen4 Glock, the ergos on the large frame Glocks really suck, but the new grip of the G4's is a big improvement. As far as holstering a loaded pistol with no safety goes, as long as you do it right (and know how to do it right) it's not an issue. It becomes second nature. Personally I'm a fan of the M&P without a safety, in any calibre.

.

Ya i heard about the locking block issue but for me its not as issues as of yet. My dad replaced and when I need to ill replace mine as well. He replaced his at around 10k rounds down the tube.

Don't compare a 20 to a 17, two different beast. The 20 kicks way harder than the 22 which is way harder than the 17. The Glock 17 Gen 4 is mild.

Best to try them all first unless you like Buy & Sell on the EE.
I have seriously considered a Glock 17. I have yet to shoot one. I did shoot a Glock 20 recently. It was like holding a 20 lbs crowbar tightly in one hand, then violently swinging the bar against a 300 lbs anvil while keeping a very firm grip.....can’t really say much more about it.

I have handled a SIG - felt like a Ferrari in my hand.

I have shot a 92 which was great, but that was years ago.

Well After owning 2 fine Chinese made handguns I am going to purchase a high quality firearm (nothing against Norinco)

I have narrowed my search down to the following:

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm - range kit

SIG P226

CZ 85 Combat

Beretta 92 A1

I really want a sig, however am thinking twice after the SIG USA / Germany thread.

From what I have read the CZ - can’t go wrong.

I have always wanted a Beretta, however have read some horror stories about QC issues with the newer models.

Smith & Wesson is probably my best choice, however I don’t know if I can get passed the fact that there is no manual /thumb safety.

Can anyone with experience regarding the above please shed some light regarding the USA SIG, USA Beretta and the M&P 9 safety features.

Thank you

Black S. - my first advise - choose your alias wisely, abbreviation of yours may not be what you want it to be.

Second - figure out what you wanna do - shoot for fun, competitive, all of the above, none of the... etc..

CZ guns can be a great blessing and can be a curse, your part is ~50%.
If you do get to settle on CZ gun for not very clear reason - go with Shadow - shoot 5K rds thru it, compare with other guns, speak up on this very board then. Avoid guns with Firing Pin Blocks to start with.

"Avoid guns with Firing Pin Blocks to start with"

Why is that?

Black Slide -BS - better shooter - JK

These issue's with the locking block on the Beretta were from year's ago. Since then the locking block's have been improved upon. You should be getting 15000-30000 rounds out a Beretta 92 series pistol before needing to replace any parts. As with any gun parts do eventually wear out. It is no different than having to replace a slide stop on a CZ. They are all great guns but let's face it, if you put a sh**load of rounds through any pistol you are eventually gonna have to replace some parts.

Beretta 92-good, Sig P226-good. Just get the one that fits you the best. CZ's are reliable, but they're like a Volvo to me, reliable and boring. If you like the CZ action there are many other versions of this design that are more user friendly (in my opinion). Jericho 941 or even a good old Browning HP. Just my 2 cents.

I really don't understand your concern about the lack of safety on the M&P. If it is deemed safe enough for most of the security companies in Canada so much so that the largest ones such as G4S carry them, it is certainly safe enough for you. A few police services are also going to be making the switch.

That being said. The most reliable in that group is likely the M&P, the least is the Beretta. Your best bet is to check them all out in person and see which one suits you best.

I agree. I am over thinking this purchase. I think it is going to come down to the Beretta, M&P and SIG.

I have a CZ 85 Combat. It is a great gun, EXCEPT for the factory trigger - despite online reports stating the Combat came with the 'same' internals as the Shadow, referring to the lack of the firing pin safety inferring a lighter trigger, the trigger was gritty and had a ridiculous amount of creep. It was also heavy.

After fondling it for a bit, I finally had enough and ordered the competition hammer from CZ USA and installed it (everything worked fine on the drop-in install except for the safety, which required some minor filing to get functioning again). Now that I have a fully functional CZ 85 WITH an awesome trigger thanks to the hammer, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I never even bothered shooting it with the factory trigger.

So, if you're planning on keeping it absolutely stock, I would probably recommend the Shadow over the Combat. The Combat is a great gun with the competition hammer installed, but that little upgrade along with a lighter mainspring costed me close to $100 after CZ USA's $$$ shipping was factored in ($30 or so IIRC). If I hadn't received such a great deal on the Combat, it would've been poor economics to buy it over the Shadow.

- So If I drop my SIG P226 on the ground while a round is chambered there is a safety feature that will keep the firearm from discharging.

What are the safety features of the M&P? I'm ignorant as I have searched this numerous times and found little info.
