Question about beginner IPSC / IDPA gun

Well, WRT to putting a few thousand rounds through before I do the course, too late, did IDPA intro last weekend. LOL :) and, for what its worth, I think I did ok.

In my circumstances, Im happy I did given there wont be another opportunity until early next year.

I have a GSG 1911 that Im *still* waiting on the reg cert for and plan to start working with and, bought myself a very nice used M&P Pro from a fellow CGNer (which has gone very well so far) which I'll hopefully be able to start shooting in a few weeks and I think will get me off to a decent enough starting position for next year.

I'm going to look at IPSC later down the road and will look to upgrade the gun later on if I find that it actually becomes the limiting factor for me (I like shiny things, so, Im fully expecting that ill be looking at replacing the M&P with something else this time next year). For the foreseeable future, the gun is not going to be the problem. :)

And, when i can actually start shooting the 9mm i'll be saving my brass for the next step, entering the world of reloading.

Actually, IDPA at CFGPA will continue through the winter except for Jan and possibly Feb, weather dependent.
There will be another match in November. Hope to make that one!
Make sure to sign up and register for the matches vs. just showing up. That caused a huge delay the last match as CFGPA just switched to Practiscore and new arrivals had to be re-squadded.

Sounds like I'm a few months behind Chewy. I have a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow. Are there limitations on what can be used for holsters and mag pouches for IDPA? I am not sure if I want to do IDPA or IPSC, so would like to get something that is ok for both.

On a related note, I live in Prince George. After reading through the Rod and Gun Club website, it looks like we do both IDPA and IPSC, but seems like IPSC might be bigger/more organized in Norther BC. Is anyone able to way in on this?

As far as holsters go, a good retention holster will be fine for either to start ( Solely Canadian etc) and will be good for IDPA in definatly, if you shoot IPSC you may want to upgrade to a " go fast" holster down the road. DO NOT buy a Serpa style holster, the kind where you have to push with your forefinger to release the gun, they are banned for safety reasons in most competition.
If you want to shoot IPSC, you will need to take the Black Badge course, IDPA you can shoot by demonstrating holster competency, no course needed. Have fun no matter which you choose to shoot :)

Generally speaking, IDPA requires less in terms of an investment in equipment (mags, pouches, holsters, belts, etc).

Can’t speak about the popularity or relative availability of IPSC vs. Idpa matches in your area, but as a rule IPSC matches are waaayyy more prevalent in most areas. In the spring, summer and fall outdoor season often I will have a choice of 2-4 IPSC matches within driving distance to choose from each wknd.

If i were you I would gear up to shoot IPSC. And if you want to shoot both simply get two holsters. Or if funds are really tight, get a holster like a Bladetech which will allow you to easily add and remove the drop offset gizmo most use in IPSC.

Thanks! This is helpful. Funds aren't too tight, especially if I sell the 1911 I have listed. That'll pay for holsters, mag pouches and ammo for practice. Should be all good.

What would be a decent "entry-level" holster for IPSC? Or even just a good holster period. I was looking at the DoubleAlpha holsters for IDPA, but I take it I would want to go with something else for IPSC? Thanks again!

I can't help you with the IPSC gear you will need, but if you are going to shoot IDPA, and can afford two setups, I would suggest a Solely Canadian Concealment holster for your Shadow, best holsters in Canada hands down. Remember that IDPA is from concealed carry, unlike IPSC you can't run a double belt or a drop/offset, and you will be wearing a covering garment( shirt, jacket etc).
I absolutely love my Solely Canadian gear, Tim does top notch work and they function flawlessly

There are lots of good holsters possibilities for IPSC. As mentioned, if you are looking for one that will work in IPSC/Idpa/3 Gun imo thinking bladetech would be a good economical bet. For IPSC you’ll want to add a DOH to it, which you can remove if you want to use the holster for Idpa. But thats a bit of a pain to do regularly. So, if funds are not an issue i’d suggest getting two holsters.

Personally I use and like ghost holsters for IPSC. I use both the Ghost One race holster and Ghost Stinger/Thunder in a Production division. Both are fully adjustable and the Ghost Stinger/Thunder can be used in uspsa Production division. If you are a new IPSC shooter i’d Recommend the Ghost Stinger/Thunder.

If you're looking for a good holster for IPSC that won't break the piggy bank, I'd recommend the DAA PDR Pro II holsters but the drop and offset might not make it approved for IDPA even though you can raise the holster higher and closer to your hip. DAA mentions IDPA on the description but does not outright say it is IDPA compliant. The original PDR Pro holsters are IDPA compliant and could work for both IDPA and IPSC.

Get a holster that is both IDPA and IPSC compliant. I assume by IPSC you mean IPSC Production. The difference in drawing speed between holsters is so small for most shooters buying two holsters is really not necessary. This is particularly true if there is any movement from the start position to when you reach a shooting position.

Thanks! I think I've decided to go with Hammer Armaments (Thunder holster and Odin Mark II mag pouches). Hopefully they work out. Website makes them look pretty and I've received positive reviews locally.

I see you've already got what you need!
But this thread was a great source for me, and I'm now sourcing out proper equipment to take my BB.

One thing I didn't see mentioned here, or anywhere else during my searching - when it comes to holsters - it's highly recommended to use ones that have tension screws (like pictured above) and not ones that use trigger guard locking system. (Like BlackHawk or some Fobus holsters). This wasn't something I had considered or thought about while I was looking around. Thankfully, the guys at Phoenix gun range in Edmonton - clued me in.
There have been several recorded incidents where people nearly or did fire while drawing. They are extremely dangerous to beginners.

According to my local gun range, Blade-Tech are the most popular and common.

Blade tech makes a very good holster and is popular for certain. Anyone looking for a quality holster might want to look up Soley Canadian holsters. I now have two with a third on its way. They are, in my opinion a step over either the Blade Tech or Comtac. The latter is another very popular holster.

Hi Folks,

Looking for a starter intermediate gun recommendation for IDPA and IPSC - suitable for large hands.

Apologies in advance if this has been covered, i thought it would have but my searches yielded nothing useful.

And, probably most importantly, it fit ok in my rather large meaty hands.

To fit my large hands, I swapped out the stock medium frame on my Sig P320 for the large size, and I love it. Given the Sig's modularity, this is very easy to do, for about $70. Shoot IPSC production with it, and it works just fine for me.

shadow for IPSC but might be too heavy for IDPA by the rules. If you have big mits the glock will bite your hand
