Hey guys, here is a question I can not seem to fine a straight answer to.

If I have an 870 with a pistol grip, and a 14" barrel... It is too short (under 26")

But if I were to ad a breaching choke.... Would that be NR?
Assuming the OAL is over 26?

Also, how is OAL measured? Parallel to the barrel? Or tip of barrel in an arc to furthest point?

Thanks

Dave

1) Muzzle devices don't count for OAL, so a breaching choke won't help you.
2) The RCMP have decreed that a pistol grip shotgun with a barrel shorter than 16" will be considered to be a handgun and classified as restricted. See this thread for more info on that:

3) OAL is measured parallel to the bore of the barrel.

All that talk of some supposed "memo from the RCMP", but its never produced. 14" pump with a birds head type grip that puts it over 26" is fine. Sage stock will also put it over 26". DLASK 8.5 with a hogue short LOP at just over 27" is fine.

What about a top folder stock?
When collapsed it would be pistol grip, but still have a full shoulder stock attached to the gun?

I may be wrong, but a breaching attachment should be no problem for over all length. Where it isn't ok is for barrel length on a restricted rifle where it has to be rifled all the way

Nope, you're talking about barrel length.... Even then it doesn't need to be rifled, you can have a flash hider machined into the barrel.

So I guess I should build it, (without attaching the stock to complete the firearm) and email a picture to the cfc? Asking if it would be NR or restricted?

While keeping a printout of their response with it in case I were to be challenged.

I'm not sure I would go that far....just keep OAL over 26", and you should be fine. I have a DLASK 8.5 with a Hogue short LOP stock, and its a tick over 27" with a sling plate (not shown), and its fine. This pic is about 26.5 as you see it.

For a top folder, if the folded length is under 26", its a no go (or restricted). Pin it open, that's ok.

You sure about that? Care to quote the section in the CC, firearms act or RCMP bulletin that confirms it?

My communications with the RCMP have told me so. Has your experience told you otherwise? Or can you point me to where it says, "ALL" includes everything but the flash hider".

No, I went looking for an answer one way or the other and couldn't find it. What I was thinking of is the easily removed accessories not counting. If the muzzle device was pinned or welded in place then I can understand it being included. It sure would be nice if our gun laws had been articulated in a clear, logical fashion instead of the ridiculous garbage we got instead.

I guess I will email the cfc about the muzzle device.

I understand that it does not affect the function, and is easily removable. But then again, it is also easy to remove a stock.

Especially like the MCS or cadex ones. Push a button and collapsible becomes removable.
