Question about OAL

First I've ever heard that. Do you have a reference?

The link in post #2 goes to a thread where it was discussed more. Sargent Slaughter was the one who brought it to my attention. There doesn't seem to be anything on official letterhead that I can find, which is why I asked the CFC for an answer.

Because of this thread I sent an email to the RCMP and asked. They emailed back requesting the details of the gun in question, so I gave them a Remington 870 with a birds head pistol grip and both 14" (OAL of 26.25") and 16" (OAL of 28.25") barrel options. Whatever comes back I will post here verbatim and hopefully this can be settled for good.

Well, I got my answer. The RCMP Firearms Identification people have confirmed that a Remington 870 with bird's head pistol grip and 14" barrel will be classified as a non-restricted firearm as long as OAL remains above 26". I can post the actual text of the email or print and scan the email conversation if anyone wants, but it was just a one line answer confirming that the above combo is classified as non-restricted.

Yes, I will be keeping all the contact info and message string confirming this, just in case.

Did you get an answer regarding a flash hider and over all length? Cheers.

I never asked about that, just the classification of pistol grip shotguns over 26" OAL. OP could ask from the CFC site if he wants to confirm it, they were pretty fast to respond to my question. It only took 5 days including some back and forth to clarify details.

Thanks for doing this, Mark. I think it would make for useful reference material if you would post a pdf of the correspondence. It ain't worth nothing if it ain't in writing...!

It might actually be worth a new thread specifically on the subject: That would make it easier to search for and find in the future.

...and this is what's been stated several times (or more, I'm sure), as well as in the law. OAL Over 26", ok. Under 26", not ok. Its as simple as that.

i had as well as Sargent Slaughter a conversation with a rcmp tec by the name of Valerie who told me in no uncertain terms that a pistol grip combined with a less than sixteen inch barrel would be classified as restricted . it would appear that they have reversed there opinion and have gone with an overall length of 26 inches to be unrestricted with i would suppose includes any barrel length as long as the 26 inch mark is maintained . this begs the question of the mares leg which does not have that measurement. obviously the 26 inch length is not written in stone . i intend to ask that question again as the last time i asked i was given the lame in my opinion excuse that the mares leg was based on an antique receiver which is nonsense .if nothing else our gun laws are a legal trap for the unwary and impossible to decipher in a reasonable manner .

Rifles and pump shotguns have slightly different criteria, and there was something about the mares leg that made it different (according to the powers that be), and it was something strange. If I recall, correctly (and I was wrong once before) the mares leg non restricted status had something to do with the action, not the barrel or over all length but I don't know what it was
