Question about OAL

So a 14" with pistol grip or folding stock should be good?

Holy moly.....why is this so hard to understand??

If you can attach some sort of pistol grip on your 14" shotgun, AND its over 26", your ok. Under 26", no. If your folding stock FOLDED is under 26", no good.

No clear answer on the muzzle device yet though.... do you know where I can get that info?

If you are planning on always having the muzzle device on it, silver solder or spot weld it on and then it becomes a "permanent" part of the gun which would count towards overall length (I verified this with the CFC when I built a 12.5" folding stock shotgun a while back).

So if it is removable it doesn't count?

Their wording was that it had to be permanent (not sure how that works since you can switch from full stock to pistol grip in about 2 minutes). I did specifically ask if a muzzle device that was welded, pinned, or silver soldered on would count towards OAL and they said yes but would not count towards barrel length.

All that talk of some supposed "memo from the RCMP", but its never produced. 14" pump with a birds head type grip that puts it over 26" is fine. Sage stock will also put it over 26". DLASK 8.5 with a hogue short LOP at just over 27" is fine.

Because of this thread I sent an email to the RCMP and asked. They emailed back requesting the details of the gun in question, so I gave them a Remington 870 with a birds head pistol grip and both 14" (OAL of 26.25") and 16" (OAL of 28.25") barrel options. Whatever comes back I will post here verbatim and hopefully this can be settled for good.

Whats their email address? Is there a specific one for firearms?,

obviously if the shotgun is over 26" with the pistol grip and barrel, it is good to go.... but my question still stands... does the muzzle device contribute to the OAL?
if I had a shotgun that was 25" (and restricted) could I attach a 1" breaching choke and have it 26" and non-restricted?

That is all I wanted to ask, so Mark, if you get the answer please let me know.... (or if anyone knows for sure with proof)

is it OVER ALL LENGTH?
or for some strange reason is it not considered long enough?

PS, do not think in terms of semi center-fire rifles that require an 18.5" rifled bore, where the flash hider is not contributing to the barrel length.

Here is what I have so far, But I would like to get the smallest barrel I can, preferably with a breaching choke, (hence my question)

and a flashlight built into the extension (since it is mag fed anyway)

right now it is 28" and change... if I put a 16" it would stay NR.

I believe a mag extension that goes past the barrel on a tube fed would count towards overall length as the gun could not be used without a mag extension or end cap, not sure how well that argument would word for a mag fed though.

Gotta love the CFC's made up rules, it "should" be overall length including anything thats on the gun from one end to the other...

If you stay over 26" then you are fine with the above gun. The issue that was raised applies only to pistol grip only shotguns, with no butt stock on them. You have a stock and that clearly defines your shotgun as a long gun.
