Okay - a little introduction. I'm super-nooby. I put my PAL paperwork in over a month ago and am anxiously awaiting 'thier' approval.

For quite some time I was running flat into the RobArms XCR camp.

I then saw the Troy Industries M14 kits.

I shot a M14 once, at a range day.

I like it, it's bigger, a heavier round, can be used for both 'reaching out' and closer 'reaction' drills.

I'm partial to the Troy Industries MCS stock.

As I understand it, this is the difference between the M14 systems available to us, the Canadian civillians.
M14 is prohibited.
M14s and M305 are china-clones, semi auto and unrestricted, am I correct in saying this?

That said, I've been unable to find much info on my preferred M14 choice, the SOCOM - is this unrestricted in Canada? If so, where is it available?

If it is NOT unrestricted (Can't seem to find any info on barrel length), will the china-clone M14's fit into the MCS stock system just fine?

Another question, What the hell is the difference between .308 and 7.62x51?!

These are all questions I've been unable to find help with through searching or google.

Thanks for your help CGN.

I'm sorry, I thought I had looked as far as I could on my own - perhaps I just don't know where to look.

Further, I compiled all my questions in one thread - I've seen the reactions to multi-thread topics to know better.

I don't mean to be sarcastic at all, I'm genuinely looking for help here...

Howdy. All the questions you've asked have been asked time and time again, check out the older posts in Main Battle Rifles and you'll find discussions on all of it.

As far as I know:
.308 and 7.62x51 are very similar. Some people intermix both, some don't. Seems there are lots of expert opinions out there. By memory, I'd say that .308 has higher pressures. There is a similar discussion on 5.56 vs .223. I've known people with .308's that shoot surplus 7.62 in them. I haven't seen any 7.62 rifles yet.

The SOCOM that I have seen was restricted.

The full length M14's we get made by poly tech or norinco are non-restricted, and are similar to the M1A's that Springfield Arms makes. They are essentially 5 shot semi-auto rifles.

Start by reading the FAQ's at the top of the forum, then come back and ask us for more information! That's why we put them there and then 'stickied' them...

After that, don't buy ONE Norc/Poly M14... buy TWO of them. One to keep long/original and one to chop down to 18.5" for your 'non-restricted' SOCOM wannabe! :D

Thanks for the responses guys,

One more thing...

Is the Troy MCS a drop-in for Canadian M14's?

Are there retailers in Canada carrying them?

Lots of help here for the M14 type rifles.
BUT remember there has been 4 or 5 years of repeat quwestions from those new to this rifle.
Like Hungry says, read the "sticky" threads ( top of forum) , Tonnes of free info. It is a lot to soak in but many if not most questions can be answered. Also their is a couple good books. Google Scott Duff
Welcome to the m14 club and from the sounds of it, welcome to the shooting sports in general
Lot's of good folks here in the MBR, we're all pretty fanatical about the m14 round here ;)

No problems putting the Nork in the troy mcs.Just put a bit of locktite on the spring guide pin and your good to go.Chopping the barrel to a non restricted 18.5 is a nice mod for this set up.

Not to snub the Troy lover's but if you were looking to get the best of both world's I would look for these two after market stock's;

Only for 3 personal reason's;
1) Lightwieght & more balanced platform's.
2) Take down & servicing is way easier.
3) Price.
Now if you want the sniper style M14 well then there is no nicer than H20 MAN's Crazy Horse rig!

I'm really not a fan of the Troy MK2. They cheaped out on it over the mk1
They've switch to a feeble gas system plate replacement thingy. All held together with 4 poorly hardened flat head screws.
I just did up 3 tactical rigs in troys for some "can't be named for security reason's" kinda folks. Pretty sweet lookin.
Here's one with elcan specter, surefire and harris bipod. She's some sweet #### :)
