Question for Hunt and camp boss's - hunting drama

I really feel for those of you that are getting burned for this. Respectful folks dont do that to each other. Perhaps OP needs to adjust the intake screening process. Another thing a few mentioned was doing a cost up front measure and run it like a business. There's more protection for you in that. Also, and I'm just throwing this out there...what about someone starting a thread for listing hunting camps available for rent. There are less than great people out there but there are also some really great people that just want to hunt. Having a camp manager/boss isn't a bad thing either. Takes the drama away from you OP.
 
i recently bought a remote camp (boat access only) just north of north bay ontario and had the group that i hunt with for moose come up the second weekend i took possession. i told them the camp was mine and i would make the decisions but if anyone came up to help put the new roof on and clean up the camp they could use it no charge on weekends and we would do a moose hunt and spring bear and fall hunt. there would be no charge for coming up all i want is help to do work around the camp. the guys came up that weekend we worked hard but had fun. after that when it came time to to more work weekends no one was available but come hunting season they were. i thought what the hell no one wanted to work at the camp but everyone wants to come for free to hunt. my wife and i use it as a cottage on weekends so we decided if no one wanted to help fix the place up then i wouldn't ask anyone to come hunting. i thought it was a pretty good deal help me fix the place up and you can use it for free but no one else wanted to come back to much work ! its hard to find people that will help do the work that is required to have a place to hunt.

Well the organized hunt camp atmosphere is definitely a long established Ontario institution that's for sure. The one camp I belonged to many years ago had its 99 year lease run out in the late 80's. There now on a 10 lease I believe.

I posted my comments much earlier to the OP on my experiences with running a large hunt camp organization, and my suggestions to him. It can be rewarding, but it is also a lot of work, and responsibility. We had 600 acres and another 1000 under lease. Organizing the daily activities and policing our property from trespassers was a daily happening.

I do not regret having built a camp and running it for friends and acquaintances to come up, a lot of great memories and times, but I certainly do not regret selling out either. Hunting season is all for me to enjoy now, peacefully and by myself. I have a huge secluded acreage where I live now and I hunt and roam it on my own.

So how does the lease work? Can anyone still use the crown land?

In bc farmers can lease crown land, logging companies have timber leases, hunting guides have a lease, but none of them can prohibit access to the public other than an active logging/mine area but that is safety related

There is no way to lease land from the government to build a private hunting camp and prohibit access to said crown lands under lease

To my knowledge at one time the Ontario government offered land leases for about 2 acres of crown land in certain areas of the province for hunt camps and recreational use. There was hundreds of them granted around Ontario. When it started they were on 99 year leases. As time went on and these leases expired some on land the government did not want under lease they did not renew, others like the camp my friend has they renew them for 10 year increments. The Ontario government has various crown land opportunities from time to time and they make up the rules as they go along. The land leased for these purposes is never more than a couple acres, Just big enough to build your camp and park a few vehicles. Usually unless otherwise posted anyone can camp on crown land in Ontario for a period of either 21 or 28 days and then you have to move and leave nothing but your footprints behind. In my area all nonresidents of Canada are not allowed to camp within several kilometers of most lakes and rivers. This was a protection law brought in by the tourist outfitters to force folks to use there facilities.
My neighbour were I live now had a long term lease on a lake to run a tourist camp operation. Several acres. Due to health and age issues he and his wife could no longer operate it. Part of the lease agreement was that the land had to be returned to near original condition if they chose to close the camp. So that's what they did this past summer they removed all the structures and docks and got it back as close to original as they could.

You might want to send a letter out to all the past renters explaining why they have screwed themselves out of your cabin, too. Lots of grown adults act like children and it should be pointed out to them.

Yeah and then wait for some ass hat from one of those groups to sneak in there and torch it !!!!!!!!!!!!! Just shut it down and don t provoke anyone. These days you cannot under estimate what some people will do.
 
I think you're just having sh*t luck. I've given up on hunting in groups or being part of a camp. Maybe I just don't like people in general but I am a lot more successful by myself. I still take people with me but they're either good friends I trust, family or newbies who have an interest in hunting.
