Anyone ever have a broken striker retaining pin? Just got mine and was detail stripping it like I do with all my new guns, and it seems my pin was cracked from the factory. Had a hell of a time getting it out as a result. Anyways, just gonna hit up Home Depot and find a replacement that fits rather than wait on Springfield.

Its been a while since I've worked on my old XD-40.

Is the stiker retaining pin the roll pin on the top of the slide?

If so, you should not remove it completely because they are very difficult to get back in without damaging it. however, yours was broken. You should be able to ask for a replacement through warrantee, but resist sending in your gun to FN Sports for them to work on.

When you re-install the roll pin, the gap should be facing towards the front of the gun.

good luck..

Yup that's the culprit. Thanks for the heads up, didn't know the gap faces forward, is there a purpose for that? Gonna try to find a coil pin as replacement, just a roll pin with a couple more rolls.

be very careful with that. If that pin is not in there super tight, it can come loose and maybe fall out resulting in a broken firing pin.
This happened to me when my XD40 went back to FN Sports for a seperate issue. The not so qualified person who worked on my gun had completely dissassembled it, I'm guessing he either could not re-install the roll pin or he lost it and it was replaced with a coil spring like you described. It fell out within the first 10 shots and the striker broke.
Not only that, the "gunsmith" did not reinstall the firing pin return spring. I guess he thought he was working on a glock. Who knows.
I would really try to get a hold of the proper roll pin and fix it yourself.
I dont have the exploded diagram in front of me, but the gap has to face the front of the gun because the striker comes in contact with the pin from behind.
It was a tech at Springfield Armory I had talked to who told me how to position the roll pin.
Good luck..

Wow, thanks for sharing, that's interesting. I'm pretty confident that it was the lack of return spring was what caused the striker to break because upon closer examination, the striker travels just as far with or without the pin, but without the spring it slams forward into the hard slide surface. Anyways, it seems Powder River sells the coil pins as an " upgrade" so I'm gonna give it a try. Will let you know how it goes.

yes, perhaps....

You should be good to go if the pin is made for the gun.

Enjoy your pistol. I havn't used my xd in a few years, but was my first gun. It has seen many ipsc and idpa matches and has shot well over 20000 + rnds.

After my poor experience with the canadian warrantee work a few years back, my gun finally ended up back at Springfield USA. They completely rebuilt my gun with new barrel, trigger assembly, springs etc. Its like a brand new gun now. All done under their warrantee.

I have never had an issue with it since.

I shoot a different gun now as my primary tactical competition pistol, but still like to bring out the xd once and a while for nostalgia.

cheers..

Mind sharing your experience with the warranty work. I feel their lifetime coverage is a pretty nice feature, but in case I ever have to use it, I've been through the whole "send it to the Canadian distributor" thing with other brands. Wondering if you had to contact SA directly, and what was the process/legalities with sending it to the states and back up?

If you can make out how much tighter the roll is on the top half, that is how it came put of the gun. Looking into the slide, I was able to see the bottom half of the pin blocking it from coming out, even before I applied any significant pressure with the same size punch (3 mm). Anyways, that's what convinced me it was already broken or at least cracked from the factory.

hmm...
that looks really unusual.
It wasnt my call for the gun to go back to the states. It had gone back to FN Sports 3x for a broken trigger spring, and every time it came back, they had screwed it up with either a part missing, or improperly installed.
I made a lot of noise about it, phoned Springfield myself and complained about the Canadian service, and The excellent staff at williams Arms had made a heated phone call to the distributor as well.
After that, it ended up at Springfield Armory USA. Maybe they told the distributor to send it back, I dont know.
But in the end, it came back to me in perfect condition and completely rebuilt. Pretty nice!

So, leason learned is that distributors are just buisness people, shippers recievers. They dont necessarily have anyone qualified to work on firearms, even though they are resposible for warrantee repairs.

Your repair is very easy. You just need the parts. A call to Springfield may help and they can let you talk to someone in their tech department to answer questions about assembly, dissassmbly, etc.

But bare in mind, everything to do with firearms and parts coming out of the states requires a lot of patience.

You have to use your back up pistol in the mean time.

What ??? You dont have a back up pistol ??? Time to go shopping man !!! :)

good luck..

Wow, could imagine that headache! I have no problem making the repair myself... this time. Thanks for sharing but just ine more question: when it came back to you, was it shipped from Springfield, or the distributor, or did you pick it up from your retailer?

I picked it up from my retailer.
The distributor has to handle any cross border shipping.
Hope you get your gun running soon.
cheers....
