Question for you .22lr pistol owners

Smith 41, Ruger MK whatever,High Standard Supermatic, Smith 17, Kimber Rimfire Target are all good. Single Six is a neat plinker as well.

If you are going to spend the money on a Sig Mosquito you might as well look into a p220 or p226 with the 22 kit from the factory, it gives you an option to upgrade to a centerfire in the caliber of your choice at a later date. questar had a deal going for these a while back.

I want a P226 but i don't have this kind of money to spend on firearms right now.

I've been following this thread with intrest.

The local commercial range has a S&W 22A that I've rented about 4 times now to let me "fill in" some .22 shooting between magazines of the 9mm. Now although there gun has given me a fail to chamber about once every two magazines I have to say that if you saw the condition of the gun and how the slide sort of "oozes" back and forth you'd think this was pretty darned good. I figure that if this thing was kept clean and lubed correctly it would be a superb gun for .22 sessions. And while I know it doesn't have the best rep in the world it is far more accurate than I am. Best of all it has a nice grip and points well for me.

And they don't come much cheaper if the budget is a concern. And call me warped but I find that when it's shooting well that I prefer it over the Ruger just because the 22A is lighter and so it does have just a little more kick to it. The Mk III Ruger I've shot is so heavy and the slide so perfectly sprung that it seems TOO efficient and it's almost like I have to check to see if it fired or not. I know this isn't a "complaint" you'll see very often but for me it is important. I'm not only wanting to get some decent groups but I want some tactile feedback from my firearms or I may as well be clicking a mouse in an FPS game on a computer.

Sig Mosquito has known problems. Namely, there is not enough pressure in a .22LR round to effectively cycle the action each and every time. the older version are especislly prone to this (I think 2004 and older?) Be careful and if you insist, then buy it from a reputable store with good warranty policy. I would NOT buy one used.

This early one and the Neos, must both come from the same school of Eurotrash gun-design. ;)

It is just my perception, or does it seem the latest series of Euro sub-calibre copies of earlier 9mm frames, appear to be lacking in reliability department?

They are designed based on looks, not function. Even the Uramex stuff from USA (Made in China) and licenses repro's of Walther and Magnum Research are crap. Form proceeds function in those things, or rather, lets make a .22 that looks like the real thing, and oh, yah. we gotta figure out how to make it really work.

Put another way, the .50AE Desert Eagle has racking problems with reloads and cheap ammo cycling that full frame. How can a scaled down version cycle with .22lr? Impossible.

If you want a .22LR target pistol, buy a target pistol. Want a showpiece, buy airsoft.

Some of the older European designs are not trash. My Beretta 71 is light, accurate, easy to strip and VERY reliable with every type of .22LR ammo I have run through it including the cheap bulk pack crap. It doesn't jam at all.

Unfortunately it's a 12(6) but I've seen MATT's 71 that he had on the EE and he had a longer barrel making his a restricted.

Sorry Geologist, I meant the newest/latest NOT the earliest, MY BAD! designs IE Neos, P99, the Misquito etc etc (manufactured/designed within the last few years)
I was not refering to older established proven designs, such as yours.

Cheers.........
PS: What Rutger said.

I shoot a Ruger MKIII Hunter that I really like; I wanted a slab side when I was in university, but could not come up with the cash, so I got this a few months ago. I have had the MKI, the MKII, and then this one; the MKIII is my favorite other than the stupid magazine disconnect (will try to fix this soon).

i've got the "simplified " version- the 948- no levers on it at all, and the mag has a heel catch- and it is fussy about some of the ammo- some takes a second whack with the hammer

I wonder if all the people 'trashing' the Sig Mosquito have used one a lot. It's true the earlier versions had some problems. However, lots of owners, like me, have found zero problems with them if you stick to the minimags. I love that my Ruger Mark III eats ALMOST everything its fed, although it has failed to feed or fire at times, but I'd a thousand times rather clean the Sig than the Ruger. And I love shooting them both, for different reasons. The Sig is certainly not trash, that's bull*** and ignorance speaking.

I think i will start with this. Where i live, the only place to buy ammo's is Canadian Tire so i want something that eat almost everything. I will probably go with a used Mk II or III pistol.

Thanx everyone.

That is a very smart and pragmatic approach!

Even smarter is to get a S&W model 17 with a 6" barrel! Cheap, accurate and shoots everything even longs, shorts and CB caps! :D

I have found what i am looking for. Ruger 22/45 MK III Blued , 5 1/2'' bull barrel, new in the box, 300$ Wohooo!
