Question:low mounts and rings for a 700LTR?

I have a 700LTR .308. Currently it sports a Leupold turn in style mount and a Nikon 1" tube 4.5-14 Buckmasters 40AO scope. I am planning on getting a Mark 4 in the near future and would like to mount it on a tapered picattiny base such as Near or Farrell. Problem is that I tried this with the current scope and could not get the scope low enough to get a decent cheek weld on the "conventional" LTR/HS Precision stock - The Farrell base itself was very high. So my question is does anyone know of a picatinny rail/ring setup that will allow me to mount a scope on my ordinary 700LTR such that I can look through the scope without lifting my head right off the stock or having to buy an additional cheekrest? I'd appreciate any input.
Thanks. :)

That all depends on the size of the objective? Anyway you go, I would serious give TPS a consideration based on quality and price. They are a very good product with probably the best price on the market. My dad has a 700 LTR with an MPS base, very similar to the Mark 4 and FA 30mm low rings with 1" reducers for his Bushnell 3200 10X, I have shot it and not had to make any adjustment to my cheek placement on the stock. Again, it all boils down to what objective size you get.

Thanks Steve. I am not familiar with MPS or FA. What do those stand for? The objective of the mark 4 that I am looking at is 40mm (at least in theory). I was really drawn to TPS rings as well but when I last looked for them about a year and a half ago they were impossible to get. I think then I was looking at the TSR low mounts.

On my ltr I use a 40mm leupold scope, a Near sloped base(although I wish I had a flat one in hindsight), and badger medium 30mm rings. This gives me a comfortable and solid cheek weld, and is the lowest I can mountthe scope without the 3.5-10 adjust hitting the rear of the scope rail.

I am not 100% sure what fitting issue you are running into. My scope would have to be another 22cm long before it hit the barrel.

Thanks carbonrod. Last time I ordered a Farrell base and ring set and when mounted the scope sat way too high. I was forced to abandon that mounting setup and go with a plain leupold turn in style set which was the proper hight for my Nikon scope. Now, I want to get a 4-14 Mark 4 PR with a 40mm objective and 30mm tube and, as I will be ordering this stuff off the internet I am hoping to get a sense of what mounting setup will fit. If your setup works, I may try to replicate it on my rifle. I was thinking of a 20moa base as well - Do you mind if I ask why you were unhappy with your tapered base?

Both Warne and Leupold make a picatinny rail for the 700s that is about 1/2 as thick at the rear as the Farrel. All can be had in flat or plus 20 and all are about the same cost.
I have run into this on a regular basis, Farrel in good gear but tends to be very thick, which can have a negative effect on cheek weld spot.

Thanks. Do you know if the Near or TPS base is significantly thinner than the farrell?

Near won't send me his rail, prefering to ship what I order to my clients directly, for fear of reproduction I hear, LOL ,so I can't say for sure, and TPS rails I have not had in stock, so can't help you on that 1 either. I am sure ### will reply soon, he may have some insight on the height of the TPS.
The Warnes are only about .250" higher than the action at the rear, so are the Leupolds

TPS makes probably the lowest base. Warne next. Farrell's are nice and extremely high! We stock all three! 0moa are $90 and 20moa $95 - those are steel.

PM if are interested in a set.

If were not true it would be funny. I sold a new 700 LTR to a fellow CGN member who wanted some additional work done on the rifle before I shipped it to him, he decided to upgrade from the Farrel rail in the package to 1 of Nears, so I ordered the rail and for some reason Richard sent it directly to my client. The bill however did come to me. This tends to make scope mounting for a client somewhat difficult.
I don't know if Richard will be impressed or not, quite frankly I don't care. Not only was I unimpressed at this ,so was my client. It was he who informed me of why Richard chose to ship directly to MY client, rather than to me for installation on the rifle I was supplying

Yeah, the Farrell bases are crazy high. Note sure what they were thinking. The ones from Near are much lower, and seam to be a better made base.

The sloped base is just not the ideal base for my setup. The scope I use will let me reach 1km with no slope. With the slope, it would theorically reach further, but I would never do that with a 20 inch 308. It does not let me zero less then 200m however. 1 click from the lowest setting on the scope I am ~.5 inches hich at 200m with my hunting load. Means I have to hold for it.

If your scope has less elevation, the sloped base would be an asset for you. If you do want to go that route, let me know. I wouldn't mind swapping out to a flat base, but it is not a real stress point.

Thanks guys. I checked these mounts out online and I am inclined to go with a TPS base because it seems to be high quality for the money, relatively low, and I like the way it looks.

I was thinking about a tapered base as well, but also fear bottoming out the internal adjustments at the low end. That is why I have been looking for a 10 MOA base, to "get the most" out of my gear, and not lose the ability to sight in at 100. But I realize I am getting pretty particular and I think only Farrell makes a 10 moa base.

OK. I don't know what I'm talking about. I just got off the phone with The shooting edge they have a Nightforce base in 10moa. Problem is the guy estimated it is about 1/2" (12.7mm) thick. With TPS low rings that puts eye level at about 36mm, with low Nightforce rings: 35 mm, low Burris rings: 34mm. The Leupold turn in mounts that are comfortable for me now, place the scope at approximately 28mm with my 1" tube. So I need to find a base that is about 6-8mm thick that has 10moa built in. I have tried to call Near who also advertises a 10moa but no answer yet.
