Yep, an Atlas and a rear bag, I was trying out a new rear bag that day (actually a really old bag that I was trying again).
This discussion has actually been very helpful overall though. Aside from load testing at 100M I rarely shoot paper anymore and shoot steel 90% of the time.
Due to our discussions I shot more groups at distance last week and think I will now shoot a bit more paper than I have in the past. I may or may not change my load development process but as you said banging a 2 MOA gong does not tell you a high or low impact whereas paper will.
Tuning to get the best possible performance from your rig does require paper targets and the ability to plot your hits. Once you have things sorted out, go practise in the field positions you will be challenged with at the match. I think right now, there are a number of shooters who are practising with gear that is not performing to their skill or learning. I feel that is a huge negative as you loose confidence in yourself.
My winter practise rifle uses a factory barrel and it will warp when it heats up. It gets frustrating when you know you had a good break but the shot goes out. Might have to put on my match 223 barrel and just burn it up.... cost of learning.
having a super tuned rig will not ensure success in a physical discipline like PRS BUT having the confidence that the gear is working let's you make the necessary changes if you miss. If your new correction puts you on target, will that not help you with all other targets that stage? If you see that your come ups are trending up or down, doesn't that let you make better decisions on how you set up for future stages?
When you start putting shots on target and plot how that changes with light, and ambient conditions, its a skill other competitors may not have or take seriously. When you look at an ELR stage and know you are going to gain points on the competition, isn't that a good thing?
I think the need to build positions fast and get shots downrange on the pressure of time will be a wonderful new challenge to learn. Win? don't know... don't care. This is a sport where self improvement is really the first goal... at least for me.
Whether I can hit a target while balancing on 1 foot while stiring a cup of coffee with my weak side hand still needs to be determined but learning new skills is always fun.
