Just read an ad from Browning that claimed three bullets through the same hole with their BOSS system. I'd like to hear peoples oppinions on the Browning rifles as they compare to the Rems and Savages, I was thinking of buying one of the Eclipse M100 rifles. Are they worth the extra $$$

The "Boss System" allows you to tune the rifle to the cartridge load. If you reload the "Boss" still works as you can still tune it to the load but where it really shines is with factory ammo..... you can get exceptional accuracy from factory loads when the "Boss" is adjusted for that load. A bit of a trial and error to get the correct setting, but it can then be recorded and is repeatable.

The "Boss" does work as advertised.

Also, the Boss will add 4" of useless length to your barrel and blow your eardrums at the same time... certainly a great thing!

NO, they are not worth the extra $, not even worth as much $ as Rem 700 or Win Mod 70 IMHO.

I have owned one BOSS equipped gun. This gun could be tuned for a given load but it was not my most accurate gun.I develop handloads for all of my rifles and some of the other rifles were simply more accurate with their favorite load. The boss equipped rifles also are equipped with shorter barrels to compensate for the length of the boss and as a result they produce less velocity than non boss equipped guns. The boss on my rifle also kept coming loose which resulted in the point of impact changing. Also the muzzle brake is extremely load to the point where you must never fire the gun without hearing protection.I will never own another boss equipped rifle.

Browning firearms are good and worth the extra in my opinion. However, BOSS has no added value as I handload. More importantly, it makes too much noise and shortens the barrel by 2".

My advice is to buy a Browning without BOSS.

I shoot a boss A-Bolt 30-06, since I followed the directions:rolleyes: and added a bead of thread lock to the threads it has never come loose. When I first got the gun I had a ##### of a time finding the "sweet spot"but once I did it worked as advertized:D. I have since bought an A-Bolt M1000 Eclipse but have not yet scoped it.

These work extremely well for accuracy but, all other users have reported, they create what could well be the highest decibel level achievable in a rifle. I own a now discontinued Mod 70, 22-250 (sub .25")that is the most obscenly loud braked rifle I have ever seen or owned. It is even worse than a braked 24" .338-.378 Wby which had a short stay in my safe. Avoid the boss like the plague.

I own a Win M70 Laredo in 300 Win Mag with a Boss system on it. It is a great system and works as advertised allowing you to find that sweet spot for ultimate accuracy with any given load. The length issue is.........well not an issue, any firearm with a muzzlebreak installed is going to add length to the gun. The loudness issue is.........well not an issue, any firearm with a break is going to be alot louder than one without. When you wear hearing protection it is not a problem. There is another added advantage with the Boss, if you don't want it or it is too bothersome for whatever reason you can unscrew it and put on the CR version that is not ventilated but still allows all of the fine tuning that the vented Boss is capable of, best of both worlds. I got one for $30 and it works great.

What are you going to do with your Eclipse? If you are going to shoot it mostly at the range, then the Boss is an asset. You wear muffs anyway, hell wear plugs and muffs if you want, the boss will make extended shooting sessions more pleasurable as they work well as a muzzle brake. And even if you take it hunting occasionally, get a Boss CR.

If you are not going to use it at the range so much, then don't bother getting the boss. Browning are usually plenty accurate anyway, they are certainly hunting accurate.

Blank Boss

I thought you could get a "Blank Boss"...with no slots cut in it...so those with sensitive ears could still use the system...without the noise associated with the other? I've seen them...so know they are out there...Puts the whole Boss system back in order for the noise complaints.

For those that don't know. When there is a reference made to a Boss CR this is the the one without the holes what some have called a "blank Boss". It offers the benefits of tuning your barrel without the noise.

I have an A-Bolt .243 that I siwtched to a CR. Using the CR without ear muffs the noise rings in my ears for a good 10 minutes. No way.

Is it any worse than a standard 243 in a Remington, Winchester, etc.?

The BOSS works, plain and simple.

Yes it is ugly but sub moa groups from a factory sporter-weight rifle are beautiful.

If the noise is a problem buy the CR piece.

Definately not. I also have an Abolt in 243 without the boss, and it is definately my loudest rifle on the ears. As everyone says, you have to use ear protection, but in the bush, i havent dropped for a good pair of "listening muffs" so bare ears it is. For some reason, (and it sounds weird) but it has a bit of a whistle to it, and it hurts. More so than any other rifle I have (Including a ported guide gun)...
Brakes definately increase noise, but brake or no break, prolonged shooting without ear protection will cause you to hear that ring forever.
I got a chance a few years ago to play with an Abolt in 7mm mag that had a boss on it.
You spend some time on it, and they are definately worth both the recoil reduction, and the accuracy gains. IMHO.

BOSS is just marketing. Browning put that on the market just to sell some more rifles. That's all.

"Yah, Cuz changin burrel hurmoniks duddent change accuracy atall"
