Question re: legality of importing ammo by mail/freight - not from USA

Brain trust,

While in Europe this summer, I used some ammunition that I particularly liked, and I'm wondering how I can get my hands on some in Canada where they do not have formal distribution.

I'm aware that I can import up to 5000 rounds when physically crossing the border into Canada.

Leaving aside the cost of freight for a moment - which of course might render the whole enterprise impractical, my question is: assuming the manufacturer can export to Canada, can I import ammo into Canada via freight/mail? Or conversely, would I need an authorized dealer/distributor to import it for me?

Thanks in advance for any insights...

He's talking about ammo from Europe (where he tried it) not from the USA.

At least that's how I read it

KodiakJack was responding to what the op wrote. "I'm aware that I can import up to 5000 rounds when physically crossing the border into Canada."

Ohh yeah. Maybe the op should have left the word "physically" out of that. I guess the only physical border you can cross into canada is usa.

I think he meant on his person though reguardless of how you come into canada. And then wondered if one can also mail to him self. But thats not importing it. Thats shipping it here.

Hes not wondering about america. Coming back on a boat or plane he could claim it when it landed and never go near america.

Cant mail it to him self though

Naw, fellas. I’m just blind. I missed the word “not” in the thread title, and read it as him specifically saying “from the US”. (I thought it was odd that he’d talk about ammo in Europe, then jump to bringing it in from the US... D’Oh!)

Anyway, sorry OP. Just ignore me. Is it Friday yet?

Thanks for taking the time to respond, everyone.

Apologies for the ambiguity around "physical"... what I had meant by that is that if I get off a plane from, say, France, at, say, Pearson Airport, and have, say, 100 rounds of ammunition in my luggage... my understanding is that according to Canadian law I can bring/import those 100 rounds into Canada.

I wanted to contrast that to the essence of my question: according to Canadian law, can I have ammo (< 5000 rounds) sent to me in Canada directly from the manufacturer in the EU?

I glean from the responses that the answer is a simple no, by Canadian law I cannot have ammo sent to me from abroad (whether freight or courier... or whatever method would accept to transport it, Canada Post clearly does not). And hence, it would also seem that if I were to try to get my hands on some, it would have to be by asking a Canadian importer/distributor to order some in for me....

You can bring ammunition with you on a plane, but it is limited to 5 KG, including the locked box that it must be packed in. Must be declared on check in and may cost extra charges from the airline. I would not bother.
