Question re: M305 + Extended Bolt Release

Hi all. I have an extended bolt release installed on my M305 (sitting in the blackfeather RS chasis). The bolt release is from brownells but not sure if its the smith brand or other.
With the bolt locked back (i.e on an empty mag or done manually), I can only send the bolt home/into battery using the extended bolt release. In other words, the "normal" way of pulling further back on the op-rod handle and letting it fly will not release the bolt. Does the install of the extended bolt release eliminate the standard method of releasing the bolt?
I don't see anything "sticking" in the receiver.

Thanks in advance,

It should still work properly. I have a possibly insulting question. You took the mag off or put a loaded mag in before you pulled on the cocking handle?
The other thing I would think might cause it is the bolt catch being a bit sticky. Preventing the small spring from moving the bolt catch out of the way. Take hold the action to the rear and manipulate the bolt catch manually. Make sure it drops out of the way freely. If not I'd look into the fitment of the catch at the receiver.

Not insulted at all. I can manipulate the bolt catch manually (with the action to the rear) and it does drop out of the way freely. I will check into how the catch is fitting w/the receiver. Thanks for the suggestions.

There’s a tiny spring under the bolt catch. It’s supposed to help the catch get out of the bolt’s way when you pull back on the CH.
Mine wasn’t strong enough.
Solution for me was to cut a tiny bit of (extra spare)firing pin spring and piggy back it in.

If a empty mag is still in the rifle you will not be able to release the bolt into battery.
last round hold open on Mag.
The bolt stop pushes mag follower down releasing Bolt.
Sounds like things are operating correctly.

My issue is releasing the bolt into battery after inserting a full mag.

If you feel like fixing it the culprit is that spring not being strong enough.

This. With a full mag the spring should push the catch out of the way. The only time it gets pushed up is on an empty mag. That said I'm not aware of an enhanced catch that will properly depress the follower to release the bolt.

Is it. 5/20 mag? Have you tried with 4 rounds? Some of them are pinned too tight to work well with 5.

I've tried the 5/20 as well as the "shorty" mags. Doesn't seem to work with either. Might try the usgi spring route you suggested.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Where would I have the best luck sourcing a usgi bolt catch spring?

Try wolverine, they would probably sell you a whole bolt hold open, spring and pin for cheap - maybe $20 or something like that. The SAI ones from Brownells are also good to go.

I don't like the Smith Ent BHO or its clones. For example, if you set the rifle down on its side with the bolt open, it will sometimes close the bolt under its own weight. Not good if there was a round in the mag.

The GI unit works well and the M14 was designed with pulling the op rod handle in mind. These modern add-ons aren't really part of the original design, and for recreational use are definitely not a "must".
