Questions about .223 reloading - looking for non-expensive bullets.

Hello all,

I do reloading for 9mm pistol ammunition for a long time so far.
Now it is time to start some .223 reloading. I know all basics in rifle reloading. What I want to ask is: Where is the best place to buy projectiles/bullets for .223

I know that in store I can get something like 100 bullets for 25-30$ probably. But I am looking for something much cheaper than that for plinking. For example for plinking with my 9mm pistol I am always buying Frontier bullets, it costs me about 90$ for 1000. What would be the cheapest option for .223 (forget about grains and this is not for competition but plinking) ?

You can buy 224 bullets in bulk. That's right, a 224 bullet for 223 round. The thing is, they are quite expensive. Some dealers are asking $150 per 1000 while Higinsson Powder ask $110-120 per 1000. If it's for a AR, you probably need a 55 grains full metal jacket boat tail.
 
What kind of gun? Bolt, SA, etc?

If it's an AR or other semiauto, as mentioned, the Hornady bulk FMJ's are pretty well the best bullet for the price. Too bad they are back-ordered everywhere right now. :( Get them at Higginson's or here (MSG.DREW and a couple other users) when they are available.

Dante's might have some Speer or Nosler hunting load SP's available in .224 but the price is more being Speer and Nosler.

Check with Andrew and Tom at Higginson's to see if they have some SP's in Hornady or Winchester. They work nice if you are not one of these guys who just have to have FMJ's and only FMJ's.


If it's a bolt, there are some nice molds available for cast if you are in to casting. So far with range lead and good lube, they work fine in my bolt action but wheel weights or harder is still better.

'I have 12k of hornady .224 bulk I bought from a cgn EE'er... Price was fair.
I mean what..? Do you expect people to give this sh** away...?
 
if you shop around for bullets you can get some deals.

I went to a well known store In Ontario and found Win 55 gr SP bullets for $8.99.

Well I walked away with every pack they had. Deals can be had but you have to act when you cross them.....
 
I found mine at Epps. I had to dig beep in the bin to find them. They have lots of stock everywhere and its all mixed up. I found the 55 gr SP in the 62gr bin..??? You really need 1-2 hours when you go there to find stuff.

I have Stevens 200 bolt for now, but I am planing to get AR in the future.
I already checked with Higginson's Powders and they might have what I need in the nearest future.
 
As I said before I am new to reloading of rifle ammunition.
Probably it sounds stupid but my cal is .223, why should I buy .224 projectiles ?
Are these the same in terms of reloading ? In case of bolt rifle what would be the best to use ? In case of semi ?
Looks like I still have to study more :)

For the same reason one would purchase .308 calibre bullets for a 30-06 Sprg. If your a newbie to loading then do some reading and consult with any loading manuel. Have fun!

Same reason .44Mag takes .43 bullets, .45ACP takes .451 bullets, .357Sig takes .355 bullets, .38spl takes .357 bullets...

Like M12 said, get yourself a manual and have fun!
 
You can use .310 in a .308 bore, you just can't fit the x54 into the x51 chamber!

Note: Don't use .310 and a .308 rifle.
