Questions about Range Burlington

I’m would like to join my first gun club. I live in Toronto. Ideally I was looking for a club with an indoor pistol range and an outdoor rifle/shotgun range. A club with 24/7 access. The best option right now seems to be Burlington. Their website provided some information, I tried to gain access to their forum but wasn’t able to. I tried calling them with no success.

Does anyone know how I can get in touch with someone that works there? I would like to ask some questions and then if appropriate arrange for a tour.

Thanks.

if you are talking about BRRC, I have heard nothing but bad things, they're controls and restrictions seem quite ridiculous. If you're considering the drive, Silverdale generally has a good club, from what I have heard.

I actually took my safety course at Silverdale. Silverdale is sort of my second or third option, but it’s an outdoor range and I don’t see myself getting use out of it during the winter months, which is when I plan to be at the range the most. It’s also further away, an extra 20 minutes or so and if anything I’d want to be closer to Toronto, driving over an hour there and back is a little much and I just wouldn’t end up going as often as I would like to. The controls and restrictions that you mentioned are a big concern for me but since there doesn’t seem to be a perfect place, I have to compromise somewhere :-/. I’m still really not sure what to do.

Well, good post then, but I would really advise against joining a club with such restrictions, you'll do more waiting than shooting.

Target sports isn't all the far from toronto, but I don't know anything about membership

Yes, Target sports/Grange Shooting Club seems like a great indoor range with electric target retrievers. It is also the closest range to my house, only 30 minutes away. The problem with this range is that it’s $500 or $600 membership and only permits handguns, not long guns. This is another range I would consider joining, I just wouldn’t be able to shoot long guns, which is something I would like to have the option to do.

I have to disagree about Range Burlington. Yes they have some hoops to jump through but that is because after you're done you have 24 hour access to the range via your pass. They also support most diciplines of shooting sports and are a great way to get involved in things like PPC & IPSC. I've been a member there for a few years now and I find it to be the best indoor range in the area. They must be doing something right because to the best of my knowledge they have the highest membership of any range in Ontario.

Oh, and if you want access to the forum the director that handles that is on here too under the alias "Skeetgunner". Send him a PM and he'll hook you up.

BRRC is not the only range with 24/7 access, it is however, the only one I know of that requires a 1/2 dozen supervised visits, before you can even shoot.

EDIT: Cambridge is not overly far from Burlington, I just checked, its range is 24/7

Thanks for the comments. Earlier today I did actually send Skeetgunner a message asking him for a contact or if he could answer some of my questions. I hope to hear back from him.

Here are some of my questions:

1- The website says Range Burlington has over 1400 members. Does this mean there are lineups at the ports, people waiting to get a chance to shoot? Or is this not a problem? What about on Sundays, is that the busiess day?

2- On the website, there are scheduled time slots for leagues that run every night of the week. Do the leagues reserve all 12 ports during those times and the range is closed to everyone else or do they only take up some of the ports and members can also shoot at their leisure while the leagues are in progress?

General question about outdoor ranges (since I'm still trying to decide):

3-Are most outdoor ranges operational during the winter? How does it work in terms of setting up targets? Do you have to wade through deep snow all the way down range?

1. Never had a problem waiting for a port, I've heard Saturday nights are busy but I usually shoot in the afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays and it's close to empty.

2. They do indeed take up the whole range. Good if you want to join any of the various sports, bad if you want to shoot between 7pm and 11pm on a weeknight. That part I can understand being a detractor. Most people I know end up taking up one of the diciplines though. The supervised visits are so that people can get a fuller understanding of all the sports firearm owners have available to them and hopefully to get them involved. A good thing in my books and helps to show that as firearm owners we DO in fact have purposes for handguns other than to kill.

If you're coming from TO, Galt is another 30 mins commute, but I'm sure it's a good facility. Never been.

So Burlington is closed to leagues every night of the week basically from 6-11pm. Wow, that is a BIG detractor for me.

Galt Sportsmens Club might have been a possibility, but asides for the great distance, they are not currently accepting new members for rifle shooting. So it’s off the list for now.

You base your opinion on what you' "hear"...?

You're listening to the wrong people...

I've been a member of BRRC for about ten years... 'It's a fine club.

If you're too lazy to visit the club a few times before getting signed off so to speak you probably will find something to complain about no matter what club you join

I've also been a member of Silverdale... It has its negative quirks too.

I would appreciate some of your thoughts about silverdale since you were a member there.

1) What about silverdale did you find negative?
2) How does the range function in the winter? I don't think my K car would be able to make it to the range on those dirt roads in winter time even with the snow tires on..

Burlington

Nothing wrong with burlington unless you have a really blind eye for safety. I shoot there and love the after hours access. I have also shot PPC once I was holster qualified and IPSC once I had my Black Badge qualification. I normally shoot on Wednesday's however. I believe the disiplines are as follows:
Monday: Bullseye (rimfire and center fire handgun)
Tuesday: IPSC (run and gun)
Wednesday: Rifle night
Thursday: Silhouette (rimfire and center fire handgun at metallic targets)
Friday: Black powder rifles
Saturday: Morning/afternoon juniors shooting (for the kids)
Sunday: PPC
The range is also closed twice a week during the day for a few hours for cleaning.

galt has 3 month probation. Absolutly no personal firearms allowed until you have got 6 signatures and 3 months. thats why i registered at colby. 9 hrs of probation and was done with!
however, its only indoor range. Whatever thought. 2 more months until concealed carry in michigan :)
