Questions about Range Burlington

You base your opinion on what you' "hear"...?

You're listening to the wrong people...

I've been a member of BRRC for about ten years... 'It's a fine club.

If you're too lazy to visit the club a few times before getting signed off so to speak you probably will find something to complain about no matter what club you join

I've also been a member of Silverdale... It has its negative quirks too.

It's nothing to do with being lazy, the hoops you have to jump through are a fricken joke, they scare people away from our sport. After taking the safety course, and paying your membership, you must attend the 6 observation nights where you get exposed to 6 types of shooting you may not be interested in, and won't learn anything not covered in the safety course. Nothing like driving 45 minutes to watch people shoot their 22. You can't even file for full membership until you've done all 6 nights. At that point there is a rule that states the club must make your application sit for 28 days before your name can be read into the minutes, then, at the next meeting after 28 days (could be 2 months from your last observation date) they read your name into the minutes and mail you your application. Easy enough? Not really, During that period of upto 2 months, you are not allowed to shoot at the range, even though you have payed your fees and taken the safety course and passed the test. Once you finally get your membership, you then have to arrange for Tony to get you an ATT. I got my full membership 6 weeks ago and am still waiting for my ATT. Then, after months of waiting, you finally get your full privilidges and ATT, you can't shoot Saturday mornings or weeknights until 11pm.

Don't even get me started on the attitude you get from some of the directors, I've honestly never seen anything like BRRC. If another club opened up across the street, BRRC would be out of business.

One more thing (if you think that's possible) BRRC will be closed for at least 2 months this summer (probably 4) for renovations.

Silverdale is great, friendly helpful staff, they get your ATT for you quick. But, it's outdoors and an hour further.

you get exposed to 6 types of shooting you may not be interested in

Or may gain an interest in after being exposed to it as was the case for myself and many others I know. As a newbie I had no idea some of these existed.

That has nothing to do with the Permit director, complain to the CFO.

Couldn't disagree more. All directors that I talked with were welcoming, knowledgeable, and encouraging in any interest that I had in their particular discipline. From the sounds of it you may have gotten a different response due to your attitude towards being *forced* to see what goes on at the club. I will admit that it was a bit of a pain getting in but it was WELL worth it and if a club opened across the road I'd stick with BRRC. It's thanks to these disciplines that we have any legitimacy to the standard uninformed public.

Yeah... that would explain the waiting list of people wanting to join and the ever increasing number of members...

As far as the pending closure for reno's.... The fact that BRRC can afford to spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars to upgrade and improve the facility just shows how well run/managed it is.

'Can't wait to see the finished project.

I think I found a solution. The Aurora Gun Club, it’s 45 minutes from my house, a very direct route. 25 meter indoor range, 24/7 access (although right now only till 10:30pm until renovations are complete) 11 ports, handgun, shotgun(no slugs), rimfire (NO RIFLE), parking. Membership is reasonable ~300$

For rifle range, I can take advantage of Silverdale and go there for their $20 guest fee on Sundays

Any Aurora Gun Club members with some details about their experience there?

Wow I think you better cut your losses and not renew next year!

BRRC is not the only range with 24/7 access, it is however, the only one I know of that requires a 1/2 dozen supervised visits, before you can even shoot.
It is not true. There is no supervised visits. However you are required to do 6 observation nights and get a signature from each section director before you'll be given a full membership. I don't think it is such a problem, more over you get to see what other people are doing.

Speaking of other clubs that require supervised visits, as far as I know, at Sharon you'll be a probationary member and can't shoot alone at any range until you collect some number of signatures for each range. At guelph range, you can't even shoot alone and have some non-shooting person to watch you.

Or may gain an interest in after being exposed to it as was the case for myself and many others I know. As a newbie I had no idea some of these existed.
Good for you, but new members should be encouraged to go to these night, not blackmailed. I know 2 people who could not complete this requirement in the required times due to work hours and had their membership revoked... no refund.

Wrong. I called the CFO after 3 weeks, she had not received the applications at that point.

Dude, I'm not making this stuff up. Read the other posts on CGN about people #####ing about BRRC. I got yelled at by Mike for walking in at 7pm to observe one night. As you know a probational member's card doesn't even open the door till 7 pm and the website said that particular night started at 8pm.

Customer service is a term the Directors have no idea about.

True or False... BRRC has the most hoops to jump through, and the longest amount of time to get a membership than any other club in Canada.

The waiting list is due to 1 simple thing... it's the closest range for 2 million people. Open up a Walmart in the middle of China with crap hours and hire surly employees who abuse customers and you'll still have line ups at the cash registers.

Have I said anything that is untrue? If so kindly correct me.

You know it's the truth but you don't seem to have any problem with any of it. The fact is that we need to be encouraging people to join our sport, especially with the possibility of a Liberal gov't at some point in our future. All these ridiculous hoops deter people from shooting. I actively recruit friends regularly to take them shooting and encourage them to join, after telling them the requirements, and the available hours for shooting (most of my friends are interested in pistols, but don't want to do PPC or IPSC) they change their minds.

I also sit on the Board of Directors for the Conservative Party in Halton and encourage my MP to talk to the PM about proper legislation reform like 301.

What are you doing to improve the sport?

looks like Aurora Has just as much OR more red Tape then Burlington.

Guy, are you thinking about what you say before you post it? More hoops than Burlington?!? Why? Because of no shooting after 10:30 pm during renos?!? BRRC will be totally closed for 2- 4 months during their renos.

Or were you referring to no slugs from Shotguns, because that is actually a bonus. At BRRC you must shoot slugs, which cost $1.20 each with tax. As opposed to about .35 cents for regular shell. Give your head a shake.

Your problem is that you actually expect the fudds who have been shooting at BRRC since Confederation (give or take a couple years) to give a crap about new members or firearms politics. They probably care more about being able to shoot the s**t with the old boys at the club without any young folks poking their noses in than they do about actually shooting guns.

Flawlessly Logical Mr. Spock. I have to sadly say you are absolutely correct.

burlington has nowwhere new the biggest membership even close to other ontario clubs, eg silverdale 1250t members an growing.

Lets see:

  • Two posts to your name, both of them anti-BRRC
  • CGN join date about the time that BRRC severed relations with the CSSA
  • Phantom knowledge of our membership list (you're completely wrong by the way we may hit 1,600 this year)
  • Suggesting clubs that have as many or more restrictions on joining than Burlington.
So "Sixgun1", are you a sock-puppet, ban-evader or just a troll?

Does anyone know how I can get in touch with someone that works there? I would like to ask some questions and then if appropriate arrange for a tour.

Thanks.

Sorry Humble, life/work-balance kept me off the site yesterday, but I have responded to your PM. (Humble, eh? Bring back the spirit?)

I know 2 people who could not complete this requirement in the required times due to work hours and had their membership revoked... no refund.

I'd appreciate if you would have those people contact me directly. Because in the 4 years I've been on the BoD, that has never happend to the best of my knowledge. Extensions are almost always granted, unless there are other mitigating (typically safety related) issues.

True of False... BRRC has the most hoops to jump through, and the longest amount of time to get a membership than any other club in Canada.

False. We do have a few, but none are any more onerous than the rules at any of the surrounding, not for profit clubs.

The waiting list is due to 1 simple thing... it's the closest range for 2 million people.

Also false. Wentworth, Galt, HAHA, T.I.T.S. (what an unfortunate acronym :) ) Colby, Guelph, Niagara, Silverdale....just to name a few of the dozens of clubs that are within 90-minutes drive of the Golden horseshoe.

BRRC will be totally closed for 2- 4 months during their renos.

Yes, yes we will. We're also the only range built on re-claimed parkland (ok, the land is a closed city garbage dump), that has a moritorium on new home construction until 2079.

Wow. Wall of text, tl;dr. Join BRRC, its a great club, with a healthy membership and bright future.

HOLY SHEEP!
That is crazy talk, here in bc, you pay the 47$ for the year membership, go whenever you like, never to be supervised.
If I ever had to jump these hoops, no way would i be a member of that club.
Atts are done on your own, you call and get one. What club do you belong to.... ok here you go.

If you don't like BRRC. Don't join.

I joined in March - I didn't find the process that cumbersome. The 24/7 access allows me to shoot in the off hours that matches me free time.

Overcrowded - sometimes its busy but I was there this past sat at 5:30 and had the club all to myself.

I'm also a member of Silverdale for 5 years for me outdoor needs.

BRRC = great club.

Given that BRRC's membership almost exceeds the population of Vancouver Island :) you'll forgive us if we and the other GTA ranges screen a little bit more carefully than elsewhere in Canada, and no where near as much as in Quebec.

That's an Ontario CFO thing, and yes, our own local permit director needs to get better at training a backup.

You have 734860 members at your club?:runaway:
No wonder the long waits then....:p
