questions about the Beretta PX4 Storm

Hi Everyone,

I picked up a used PX4 in 9mm off the EE a few months ago and am really, really enjoying it. I find it soooo smooth shooting and accurate. I'm thinking of putting a little money into upgrading it so have a couple questions for other owners out there.

First off, I should say that this pistol was certainly previously enjoyed. The finish is really scratched up, it makes me wonder if a previous owner was using it to dig frozen gravel or something. The CGNer I bought it off of said it was like that when he got it, and all he did was replace the recoil spring with a Wolfe which I have to say is buttery, buttery smooth now. After a few mags with this pistol when I reach for one of my other semis and go to rack the slide they feel like they weigh a thousand pounds in comparison. Anyway, the amount of use the pistol has seen may effect some of the upgrades I'm pursuing.

So my first question is about the safety. I'm a long time 92fs fan, I think I've owned 5 of them over the years, so unlike many folks out there I actually prefer the dual safety/decocker feature which others often end up modding to a straight decocker. On my well-used PX4 the safety lever is not spring loaded, unlike the one on my current 92fs. With my 92, I barely need to brush it and it pops right back into place and ready to fire. This PX4 needs a good push and follow through to get it back into gear. Does your safety pop back into place with minimal pressure?

I remember years ago spending a fair amount of time on my hands and knees chasing wayward springs and pins across the kitchen floor the last time I took the safety apart on a 92 and would rather avoid repeating that experience if at all possible. I'm considering picking up some of the 92 style levers Beretta has for the PX4 and I'm wondering if their design with the lever on the low side of the pivot point (as opposed to the PX4 style wings being on the high side) would help me with the follow through, or if my problem is simply a worn out spring. I've read reports of people cutting their hands on the wings during a fast reload, but the wings on this well-worn specimen are rounded off and very comfortable, which makes me wonder if things are just as worn on the inside as they are outside.

My second question is about sights. To match the finish, 2 of the 3 night sights on this pistol are smashed out. There is still a bit of a white dot but no glow is left, so I will definitely be putting some new sights on. I had a very good customer experience with Truglo, (which you can read about here if you care: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...-good-customer-service-experience-with-Truglo ) and I see that they now make their TFX pro sights for the PX4 (front and back, they used to only make the front), so I am seriously considering those. Amazon Canada has them but they're not cheap, and I would prefer to buy from a site sponsor if possible. I also have a set of XS Big Dots on my Glock 19 and while it took be a bit to get used to them, I can't believe how good and FAST they are now that I've got the hang of them, so they are a contender as well. I haven't found a Canadian source for them yet. So my question is, does anyone know a good Canadian source for PX4 aftermarket sights?

That's all my questions for now but depending on your responses I may think of more. I wonder if I should do something to address the miles-long trigger uptake or if a steel guide rod is worth it or whatnot for example. I should also mention that I picked up a .40cal mag for it and while I've heard they are not as reliable as a 96 mag is in a 92, for the one box of ammo I've run through it in one range trip (3 x 14 rounds plus the final 8 rounds) it ran flawlessly for me with American Eagle red box.

Thanks for looking everyone and looking forward to hearing your experiences. Cheers!

I have one and in my experience the finish is terrible, scratches easily and the finish really shows the scratches. They look terrible after a little holster use.
Other than that, keep it lubed, it runs well when liberally oiled. Weakest part of the gun is the magazines.

and WHO are u to judge?-I've heard so many so called "opinions" on this forumit's not funny- on everything
from frorm revolvers to weatherbys- even my beloved neos has not escaped these trolls- point is that it's HIS, not yours and if he's enthralled with it let it be- I've got a savage 99 that some guy in the Yukon thinks is ugly but it's taken a whole herd of game-that's what is endearing to me about that rifle, not what it looks like

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative responses. Can you tell me if your safety springs back into the fire position with minimum pressure?

The safety takes a fair amount of pressure on mine. The safety disassembly is not that bad - there are lots of videos talking about how to turn it into a decocker only btw...

The finish is... not very durable. If you think yours looks rough, you should see the ex-police .40 slide I have to do caliber changes with...

Both of mine show wear like crazy. I have Trijicon sights on the PX4's and Meprolight on my M&P. Both seem to do the job.

Give it a rest. The %$#$#% gun is butt ugly IMHO. Gun no doubt functions extremely well. And who in the hell are you to say on a forum one cannot express an opinion? Most here buy their guns for function not because they are pretty. The PX4 Storm is butt ugly new get over it and by the looks of it the gun doesn't age well either. Just saying. Glad the OP likes it as he should, it is his gun. A princess it isn't.

You would think we were discussing his children for God's sake. They I am sure are, or will be all very good looking.:>)

ps I have a 1911 that isn;t a Princess either but it shoots lights out.

Truth be told she wasn't my first pick for the prom but after I danced with her once I was sold.

Anyway, where do folks get their aftermarket sights in Canada?

I have good luck with Brownells. Just make sure you specify USPS. My last order went UPS to the border and then they hand it off to Canada Post.

LOL, there is that as well.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Anyone else got a source for sights? Any other mods you recommend? Anyone else have a stiff safety?

Yes they do. I have a buddy in CBSA they are issued that gun in DAO 11lb trigger. Has to be the longest creepiest trigger i've ever felt in a gun lol.

Looks like a plastic "space" gun to me. Pretty horrible all around gun in the CBSA configuration.

I think the PX4 is beautiful and a work of art erognomically.. I call my mine Nadia

From the factory, the triggers are rough but they work in very nicely. The early models are certainly better than the new ones.

Mine has over 20,000 rounds though it and it still shoots like a dream. Only reason I have to give it up is because the barrel is pretty well shot.

As for sights OP. It's hard to find fault with the Trijicon's

I also have a friend in border services and he says the same - horrible and heavy trigger. He hates that it's his duty gun.
