I thought the only design similarity the R 22 had with the ruger was the magazine?

It uses a Ruger bolt and magazine. It uses standard AR-15 hammer and trigger systems plus an AR-15 grip and safety. (Translation, anything that's likely to break in time is an off the shelf parts swap)

It has a proprietary upper and lower reciever, magwell, barrel shroud, and stock.
