Rabbit hunting

3 more last evening. Found an excellent new spot but didn't have time to take full advantage. Going for the bag limit (10) on Saturday! Shouldn't take long. :)

Ironsighter is hard at it once again! :)

Myself I'm free on the afternoon of the 7th. I am deely considering taking the 10 gauge BP drilling out for a romp in the woods.
Maybe with just light loads of #6 leadshot 1 1/4 ounce, BP, circle fly wads and such.

Rabbits or grouse, here I come, ready or not! lol

I love the 16g and I us a 22 magnum as well always in front of hounds .that is my favorite hunt in the world DUTCH

I love the concept of the model 42, I just wish it followed in the model 24's footsteps with regard to aesthetics.

You should consider a baikal IZH-94 ...... I am with you on the 42.... yuck... but my Baikal is one of my favorite guns.... very light to carry and a joy to drag around when chacking my snares.....

Ya, I've seen those before online and always been interested in checking one out, but have never found one locally.

One issue I might have with combo guns like these is that I do rely on a scope (despite my username) for sniping hares up to 80 or 90 meters away.

A scope would pretty-much render the shotgun barrel useless for snap shooting running hares.

Maybe I should revert back to iron sights on my model 93 for hares this winter and see how much my success rate drops. Hmmmm... it is getting a bit too easy to shoot them, after all. :)

Agreed.... don't even know why they have a dovetail on them.... One negative thing about the baikal is that the sights are rather pedestrian..... I can hit cans with the .22 out to about 50 yards reliably.... but I wouldn't think these are 80 yard sights by any means....

The sights on my model 93 aren't amazing either, but I might have to just let the really far ones go, or try to stalk up closer. If I do alright that way, I might switch to a .22mag over 20GA so I can hammer the runners, too.

I'm hoping to put enough deer meat in the freezer this fall that I am not out every weekend of the winter trying to nail as many hares as I can, so maybe iron sights will be sufficient. As a kid, I was ridiculously good with irons on my pellet gun. Maybe I can regain the skill.

Sniping them from afar with a scope does make me giggle, though.

Anyone else here use a Hammond Game Getter? http://www3.telus.net/gamegetter/

I've played with mine in the back yard, but haven't had the opportunity to get any real world use out of it since getting it.

Yeah, I use a Hammond in my .308 when I am out looking for bigger critters. It live in the first opening in the shell holder, ready for the odd grouse that shows up. I use Green loads, which Brian Hammond says are overkill, but I had a bunch of them and they work for me. Not as quiet as the lighter loads.

When I was living in Cold Lake and hanging about ion the woods with Brutus, I used my 10/22 pretty much exclusively. Head shots were the preferred hit, and the ranges were usually really close, under 20 yards was pretty typical.

Cheers

Trevor, good to see you still posting here!
This morning was a really easy harvest with one taken at 2 yards, maybe a bit less. Yes, that's correct, two not twenty yards friends!!
And Numero 2 harvest with the 410 barrel.
Right now it's in the soup pot.

Easy peasy.........neon bunny hunting. lol

Saturday is Rabbit hunting day, haven't hunted rabbits since I was, like...15?
My Gal wants to get some Rabbit stew on the stove. Apparently 'Jacks' are cool too? We fed the 'Jacks' to the cats back in the day, only the Cottontails got consumed. Pan fried too I might add
Getting some culture I suppose.

There are some incredible rabbit/hare recipes out there.

One of my favourites: http://honest-food.net/2010/02/11/hare-stew-hard-times/

Hank says it is a great way for old hares, jacks, etc. but I really like it with snowshoe hares (which is all I ever get in this neck of the woods).

Also, any recipe that calls for slow cooking/braising/crock pot/etc. works really well in a pressure cooker and takes between 20 and 40 minutes instead of hours. Highly recommended!

Good luck!

Reality in my world; she'll likely handle it without my input. But I will forward it none-the-less.
She made a Soup / stew ( Venison of course ) from scratch in about 15 minutes the other day...while she was doing the finish butchering! And has won the local Bannock contest every year for about the past dozen ( except 1 year ); and that Med Hat and area, so there is a few entries, lol.
She cooks really good...looks good doing it too
