I don't think I've seen this one before. What is your opinion on having rails on a 1911?

I voted "###y and functional" but my real answer is just functional. I prefer the look of 1911s with no rail but I am Johnny Tactical and I see no point of having a pistol you can't mount a light on in case the apocalypse happens and I need to shoot zombies at night. For realistic practical reasons, I can see why many Canadians think a light on a gun is useless since ranges are either closed or lit at night.

Another way to put it is that if we lived in a free country and I used my 1911 as home defence, there is no way I would not have a light on it because we know that bad guys all come out at night so this applies to other guns and not just 1911s.

I'm just not sure how functional it would be in a home defense scenario. You'd have to know what you're doing or that light will more likely give away your position without illuminating the bad guy. Then there's the fact that in most urban dwellings, the light from the streets and various electronics around the house is more than enough to allow you to acquire the target as long as your night vision is ok. Therefore, it might be a case of needless functionality.

In Canada I just don't see the need for a rail on a 1911, or any pistol for that matter. If I were to ever use a gun for personal defense, I would rather hold a high output flashlight in my supporting hand (hands back to back) and turn it on only when required.

A 1911 is a fine looking pistol without a rail, I feel that rails detract from the looks of the gun, plus a rail can get in the way when handing a pistol.

When I purchase a pistol, if there is a choice of a rail/no rail in the model I'm looking at I will buy the non railed gun.

Pistols such as Glocks and HK's have a smooth non-segmented rail on almost all of their pistols, so there is no real option in this case.

Rails on guns in general are retarded for what we Canadians can use em for.

Buying something tacticool just for the hell of it is one thing, but mounting a light worth half the price of the gun just so you can play mall ninja around the house at night is sad.

A good handheld light used properly is a much better choice and provides a hell of a lot more flexibility. having to point a gun at whatever you want to light up can be a really bad idea!

Spending more, or specifically adding a rail to a 1911 is pretty retarded IMHO.

That said I could really care less.

Rails are great...assuming you intend to mount a light. If you're not going to mount a light, there's no point.

I like having lights on my guns. Rails are a way for that to happen. If a guy wants a rail for the sake of the look of the rail, that's big-time ###.

This thread is the equivalent of asking, "trailer hitch on a truck, cool or no?"

If you're going to drag a trailer, you need a trailer hitch. You don't mount a hitch because you like trailer hitches and you think that trailer hitches look cool. It's a mount for a trailer, that's all.

I must admit, I was a fan of rails on all kinds of pistols.
But now, to me, it's kind of had it's time...like a fad you could say.
Unless you like shooting in the dark or pointing a laser, I don't have any use for the 1913 on a pistol.

And if you like wielding a knife, this setup is also great for your rail.

This is what I "run" when I'm tactically buttering my bagel. I steer clear of jam though because jam causes jams

Same could be said for owning any type of restricted firearms in this country.

I agree that it's basically pointless for use in regular situations in canada shooting.
even for home defence, last place you want your flashlight is on your gun, giving away your exact position and even holding it back to back hand technique, same problen..
best way to hold it, is in non shooting hand and out away from your body.., yes, if you have to shoot, it may be strong hand only (so practise that alot), but if he were to shoot back, it would naturally be towards the light and not your body.. given you chance to shoot the bad guy

if IDPA has many stages in darkness or low enough light that a light mounted on the gun will give you greater performance, then, why not, if it will have value in something you do regularly and compete in.

but if not needed for something like that, then pointless... but you can still get one if you just like it cause it looks cool to you... whatever you like man... just the facts, so you decide accordingly..
