How did this get to 8 pages with such little mention of post #10?
I myself have no problem with varmint hunting if there is a need for it. I think most of us have issue with some bubba loose in the bush with a gun, absolutely killing everything in sight, just for the sake of ending life. Fulfilling some kind of internal & disturbing 'enjoyment' only. Just as tikka pointed out, we should grow out of that phase, and hopefuly sooner rather than later in life. And I'm not talking about shooting gophers on cattle pasture or coyotes where they are unwanted. I am talking about some weirdo with a 12 gauge obliterating chickadees and squirrels just to see what damage he can do.
Today I went rabbit hunting and came back empty handed, just some nice outdoor walking exercise in the snow. And that porcupine I bumped into in the bush is still alive and well. And probably wondering what a**hole woke him up from his mid-afternoon nap in the sun!![]()
You should of blown that porcupine away.
You should of blown that porcupine away.
Why?
Porcupines are one of the most destructive varmint/rodents we have in the north. Has anyone ever seen what a porcupine does to a plywood survival shack, or brake lines and tires while your truck is parked and you're out hunting sheep for a week. Of course all you dog owners know the dangers of our little quilled friend. I can think of no upside to an excess of quilly pigs like we have in the Yukon. These are rodents that need to be thinned out or the consequences can be dire!!! I can go for a drive in May here, and count 20-30 porkys in an evening. They are a real nuisance and very destructive.
Porcupines get a pass, you will be happy to find one if you ever get lost in the bush and are looking for an easy meal.

And that's your argument that every porcupine in Alberta (where Brutus lives and encountered the animal in the bush) needs to die on sight? Really?
If an animal is doing damage in some way, it may well be true that you may have to kill it. If an animal is minding its own business many hundreds of miles from your life, leave it alone.
There are many reasons why humans have to kill things. There are also many reasons some people use as rationalizations for behavior that simply borders on pathology. There is no legitimate need to kill every porcupine on sight; trying so hard to invent one is just pathetic.
"A man cannot speak but he judges and reveals himself." - Emerson I believe.
If we had porkys where I lived, I would probably gun them down if I seen one.
rral22..........My response was more general than that, and no I don't think every porky in Alta should be blown away. I was responding to a more generalized "why" porcupines may be shot in certain areas where their numbers are in excess. Most people don't know what destructive little buggers they are.
