Range Day - .30-378Wby

I had a Mk V Accumark in 30-378, hated heat. 1-3 minutes between rounds or the second will walk an inch, the 3rd will walk 2 or 3 inches. If you shot with alot of time in between two touching an one within a 1/2" @ 100yds. 3-4" @ 500. Maybe they made the brake better, but that accubrake was loud and threw every bit of loose material on the ground at you if you shot it prone. I literally carried an old blanket to keep the debris from flying into my face.

Great gun, it became rent one month when I was first self employed.....
I loaded it with Retumbo and 180 or 200 grain Nosler Accubonds.
101 grns of retumbo with 200 grn AB gave me 3150FPS and 1/2MOA
110 grns of Retumbo with 180 grn AB 3480FPS and 3/4-1MOA
100 grns of Ramshot Magnum with 200grn SGK gave 3/4 MOA and I didn't have a chrony at that time, should've been around 3150-320.

Have fun it's a great round, try not to hit WT deer with it closer than 400M, I did one at 300 and it was a mess. Tried one @ 100m and it was GROSS.

If a 500 yard shot only wounded the animal, you couldn't count on the gun to place another bullet properly until after minutes of letting the barrel cool.It doesn't sound like such a great gun too me.My 7mmstws and my 300 ultramags would shoot 1/2" groups with the shots fired one after the other as quickly as you could aim them.

None of the factory Weatherby rifles have Kreiger barrels. They have Criterion barrels.Criterion is a company owned by Kreiger, but the barrels are not cryo treated, and they are made using an entirely different rifling process than Kreiger barrels.Weatherby just used the Kreiger name with the intention of having the people that don't know the difference think that they were getting real Kreiger barrels.

Q: Why is there some confusion that we might do button rifling?

A: In 1999, we started another barrel company Criterion Barrels that manufactures button rifled barrels for the O.E.M. market. These barrels are not directly for sale to the general public. Recently there have been some magazine articles written regarding this company which has caused some confusion. Be assured that when you order a Krieger Barrel, you are getting a single-point cut-rifled Krieger Barrel.

Thanks for the info. What bullet did you use on the WT?
I checked Hodgdon's data and they list 98grs as a starting load with the 200gr AB and max as 105grs. Did your 101gr show pressure signs?

And since Kreiger clarified the barrel confusion,I haven't seen Weatherby advertising the Kreiger name anymore.Do you suppose that Kreiger told Weatherby not to use the Kreiger name anymore?

^ Not sure if I should take that as an insult? :p

You weren't blaming the rifle.

I hadn't shot for 4 months. My last groups at 200 from the bench were in the 2" to 2.5" range. Hand loads. My technique is not good. I know this, I need more practice. I went out on the weekend. Had no problem hitting the clays at 200, but my groups looked terrible on the paper I was shooting. 3 or 4 inches. I need to go out more.

I shoot a Weatherby Euromark in 7mm Weatherby magnum. I bedded it with JB Weld and free-floated the barrel.

Nice rifle. I just bought a Euromark in .378, and am looking forward to taking it out for a range day :D

I haven't shot since last fall, so a wee bit rusty too. I am heading out again tomorrow and will try my handloads and see if there is any improvement.

If you ever want to sell your 7mm, let me know ;)

I love this rifle. However, I did get a package from Gaillard Barrels a few weeks ago. Haven't decided what the new chambering will be yet.

Got out to the range today and things have improved :D

This group is 105grs Retumbo with the 200gr Nosler AB. There are only 2 shots showing as I aimed at the wrong target for the first shot...it can be seen on the target below

I say she is capable of very good accuracy. And did not need a new barrel or bedded

That is looking a bit better. I used 101 because when I loaded with 104 and 105 I chronied the same velocity for both, around 3265. If I recall correctly the 105 may even have been 15 FPS slower than 104. That indicates that the optimum performance has been reached and you are just stressing out your barrel and wasting powder. The 101 shot very well when I started working up, so I used it. This was two days before hunting season and I had enough powder left to load 14 rounds, which left me with 10 to hunt with after I retested my load and zero.

BTW, your barrel may or may not start heat walking right away, but with a round that has that much velocity and pressure you will save alot of barrel life by not pushing the limits. The RUM`s and STW are no different, speed kills barrels, velocity is not free. Your gunsmith will thank you for burning out barrels, cuz somebody has to replace them.

H-870 is probably one of the best powders if you have some.

H50BMG is also a very good powder with the 200gr bullets.

I would also try US-869 with the 200's and IMR-7828 (with lighter bullets).

I wasn't kidding about developing the load at 200 yards...Three bullets at 100 yards doesn't tell you much about the loads real accuracy.

I would sincerely suggest a 200 yard ladder test.

Best of luck!

I started at 102grs and as I progressed up to 105grs, the groups tightened significantly. I will dust off the chrony and take it out next time and see what my speeds are. She seems to like the heavier bullets by the looks of it. I have some 180gr PT and might try some just to see.

I wish I could shoot farther than 100yds, but the range only goes that far :(

Will pick up some H50BMG and US-869 though, as they seem to be comparable to H-870. Another powder that I might try is Ramshot Magnum and AA8700.
At least she is a shooter with alot more potential to come!
