Well I was finally able to get out to the Range and try out my Mosin M38 and I must say what great little Rifles these are!! It functioned flawlessly and cycled very well...has a good kick too....lol.

I found mine to shoot high with surplus rounds, but did not too bad at 100 yards with 203gr soft points. I don't think it kicks much at all, but depends what you're used to shooting.

Yeah I guess I am just comparing it to the SKS, I was using MFS non-corrosive FMJ I found I was shooting low today but again likely that was me and not the Rifle.

I have the M44 model, I fired a box of 180 gr fmj last summer and put a huge bruise on my shoulder so I put a rubber butt pad on mine, I fired another box 2 weekends ago and it was so much nicer :) , if you're interested Marstar sells them for $17

I find it depends a lot on how you're shooting it. Standing up like the OP it's not too bad, but if you try to sit down at a bench and rest it on a bag or something it really punishes you.

Call me a pussy but I first put a pad on a rifle and yesterday bought an actual shoulder pad from Wholesale Sport....will see how it will feel....

I use a soft slip on pad called "shooters friend" It really calms the mosins down. I love them but the butt plates are evil.

I keep my two Mosins and my SVT in Bore Stores gun socks. If I'm shooting off-hand, I don't mind the recoil, but if I'm shooting from a bench or prone, I fold the gun sock over double and flip it over my shoulder - makes an excellent shoulder pad.

In order of increasing recoil, from my experience:

SVT, M91/30, M44.

Don't have an M38 (yet) but I'm figuring it will be around the same as the M44, maybe even slightly more recoil, it being a bit lighter without the Bayonet etc.

You don't need it to be dusk to see the fireball with the M44/M38... Just stand a few feet off to the side of someone else shooting one. Even at high noon midsummer on a clear blue day, that fireball really sticks out. Definitely not a stealth weapon ;)

Very true, My Wife was standing back by our Jeep Yesterday and said she could see flame coming out sometimes...lol. The M38 is definitely going to be one of my main Range Rifles.
