range fun?

The key to that is "was"...

With modern handguns/rifles that can handle the pressures the 45 Colt can be loaded to out step the 44mag and that is with lower pressures if you do not reload then go with a 44mag top performance factory 45 Colt ammo is not available in Canada.

Also a 44mag is actually only .429" diameter and the 45 Colt is .452" diameter a big difference especially when wide meplat bullets are being used.

True enough, like cc says. When they filmed Dirty Harry, the 44 Magnum was "the most powerful handgun in the world". :redface:Just happen to be watching the classic 'Dirty Harry' as we speak. Since that time, there are a number that have surpassed the 44's power, including the 45 LC. The 'King', at present, is the 500 S&W which has roughly twice the power of the 44 Mag.

i have a feeling in kicks on both ends. :) so the odd 45 -70 pistol revolver is not king?

Good point, and although close, I 'think' generally speaking, the 500 S&W is considered top dog. Perhaps not, but going by the only quick comparison info I have available, the 7th edition Hornady manual, it looks like that 'may' be the case. Using a 350gr bullet in 45-70 in a T/C handgun they show a maximum velocity of 1550 f/sec. For the 500 S&W with the same weight of bullet, 1750 f/sec. That being said, sometime down the line, I wouldn't mind having a BFR in 45-70:).

Here is my most powerful handgun 4.25" Ruger Super Redhawk shortened from 7.5" by Gunnar @ Armco in Prince George I load it with bullets from 240gr XTP-Mags @ 1650fps - 405gr Beartooth WLNGC's @ 1330fps...

I feel that for all day remote area carry with an ATC that this is the best all round weight/power ratio handgun available.

I had both these sold the top one to Westicle just before he was banned forever...

HAAA, MY buddy and I went to sight my new darlin M14 in a day ago and we got into a fun match ... his Springfeild against my Norinco, we started shooting at a clay disc at 200 meters, course he has the fine crosshair scope and I had a thicker line in my scope... he won...booo
but damn that was fun...
then ....
a white tail goes tromping through the gun range during our long range semi auto challenge ... RIGHT INFRONT of our target...good thing we were shooting precision cause that coulda turned into something else....

then some ruff grouse boppin around the course... no shortage of wildlife on the live range.
that was a fun day!

I say take a buddy and shoot at different types of targets and have some fun matches...

I know the punishment my 8 3/8" 500 is capable of handing out with hot loads and especially with the heavier bullets. I would imagine your 4 1/4" is much the same.

I've made mention of it previously, but until I got an invite to shoot the 500 my buddy purchased, I had no intention of getting one. The first time I handled his I thought 'this is the biggest chunk of stainless steel I've held since I retired from the pulp mill. However, after I tried it and saw the accuracy, I had to have one. Anything I put through itm cast or jacketed, it shoots well.

I envy your ATC and can only dream. I recently picked up a SS Ruger Blackhawk convertable 45 LC/45 ACP that would also work well for that purpose.
