ahhhh, its that time of year. snow is melting and the range is seeing some activity here

today, I was out there with a friend trying out his new Sako 75 260 Remington, and I had my 260, and took my 8mm Mag out to try for the first time as well.

an hour or so later a car shows up with two guys. one had a 340 Wby Mag with a brake, and the other had a 300 Ultra Mag. After a bit of chest beating and such they set up their targets at 100 meters and got set up, resting their rifles on a sandbag in the front and nothing in the rear.

Mr 340 Wby fires and blows dust and #### everywhere after every shot. Lucky me I am at the bench next to him. :puke: His groups werent bad, basketball size. He brags about how his ammo costs $95 a box and says he'd love to come out shooting more but cant afford it

Mr 300 Ultra is torching off 180 gr Scirrocos one after another. First five shots at 100 meters didnt touch the 20x20" paper so he backs to 20 meters and five shots later he gets it +4" high, where his buddy told him to have it so it will be zero at 100. :runaway: Well, you guessed it his first three shots go about two feet high. Five shots later he is on the paper. Mr 340 Wby is out of ammo (probably a good thing) and spotting his shots. After every shot Mr 300 ultra would adjust his scope, tap his scope tube with his knuckle, and fire again. Adjust, tap, fire, repeat. He went through almost two boxes in 30 minutes before he called it "good". He got a shot that landed +2" high and close to perfect windage.

Its funny but pathetic at the same time.

more money than brains on a lot of shooters, that's true. They're ####ty shots because they can't be bothered to practice. They wound or miss a critter that fall and compensate by spending ####loads of money on gear. I love it when guys at the range tell my that they 'need' their $5000 rigs to bring home the meat.

I not getting it...

I read post after post about guys not willing to put in the time shooting OR people flying off lead in the bush during hunting season.

These guy's find their way to a range, buy a membership and rattle off some shots (and their teeth), only to be condemend as being idiots. Sounds as if the rifles may have been new or maybe they were. Bottomline is, is that they're 'working it out'.

This is bad..... Why?????

And they wonder why alot of people hate Weatherby owners.
A mate of mine from England has a whole regiment of muzzlebrake junkies who rock up to the local range.
He's beginning to get Post Traumatic Stress disorder from range visits.
One guy even bought a SAKO SSG in 308 and then 'braked it!
My mate is at the point where he's going to get his Parker-Hale 270 Win which is in need of a new barrel, cut it to 16.5" and brake it and then shoot super hot RE-19 loads just so he can give them a taste of their own medicine.

If the guns in question had been old and in 308, this thread would not exist. This is "reverse snobbery" - the mistake they made was to have powerful, expensive to shoot guns. This was made worse by the fact that they weren't able to zero in three shots like the experts, so they're also stupid I suppose.

I was down at my bush range one fall when a guy shows up with a 7mm Rem Mag. "Just a shot or two to see if it's on"
He set a 20" piece of styrofoam at 50 yards, it moved when he fired the first shot. That's good! and he left, bound for the moose fields by plane I understand.
I was working out with the 338 WM at the time, was there for the afternoon trying varous positions, loads etc.
I hope if he gets his moose, it's real close.

Yes it is. These guys are everywhere it would seem. I usually don't see them until August or September, that's when our range is open to the public on weekends.

It doesn't matter what calibre they are using - the story is the same. I usually see it with a 30-06 and anything from bolt, pump, or semi-autos (they shoot the most ammo ;)).

.

Its quite a thing watching these guys chase bullets around.
I have buddies that still wont listen to me when I say "take two or three," NO WAY. BANG-adjust, BANG-adjust.
I also have quite afew of my buddies bring along their other buddies.
You gotta see some of the optics that show up.
They wouldn't hold zero on a .22lr let alone a 30-06.I try to suggest things that they should do differently(with kid gloves on) and try not to come across as a KNOW IT ALL- they will not listen, NOT A BIT.UNTIL they have 6 or 7 rounds left in the box and when they turn to me and say "what you think?"or "I dont understand it,...its never acted like this before."
Many of them have memory loss because the damn rifle did they same thing last year(sprayed shotgun like groups),"remember when I told you to get a new scope or new mounts at least." HUH WHAT".......Never mind.

I've lost 3 target boards in 2 years. Not because the target area was shot up, (I can, and do replace them) but because these clowns blow the legs off them chasing bullets around.
I've had enough of my time wasted and its coming time to say NO MORE!
Sorry about my little rant, but I think we can all tell alittle story about range idiots. I gotta stop as I'm getting fired up!
Thanks Bartell.

"Reverse snobbery", maybe, but I guess we all expect someone that has a 340W or similar to have already gone through other calibers and finally graduate to the "bigs" with enough experience and expertize to handle it properly.

I wouldn't suggest a caliber like that to a new shooter for many reasons. Flinch and wounded game would top the list.

The real test in my mind is to approach "new" guys and offer them help and advice. I will always try to help a guy out regardless of his firearm of choice or how inexperienced or experienced he is.
I usually introduce myself and offer up some of my experience in a humble manner then ask if I might make a suggestion. ;)
If they refuse your help then at least you can say you tried...
I had one guy laugh out loud when I offered to sight his rifle in in three shots.... He bought the beer that night and turned out to be a regular guy.

We are all in this together.

A lot of idiots in general, the tin roof of our range is all shot up, the ligh fixtures which were put in a great expense are shot all to hell, 45 acp ammo cases all over the place. Why can't people just respect others property, it gives us all a bad name.

The rifle portion of ours only goes to 275 yards but i have been the only one to sign in all last week and i went three times. I miss the yardage of the Fort Mac range but some of the people that attended really irked me. I especially liked the dudes that would go put up their targets at 200 yards all the while holding their 6 year olds hand on the way out and it being a friggen nature walk all the way there and all the way back. No respect for the guys waiting on the firing line.

Makes you wonder.....
There's a hole right through the middle of the biffy at SPFGA.

Brilliant.

Is it idiocy or is it ignorance?
Many people get involved with firearms because a "buddy" introduced them to it.
He or she adopts all of their mentors bad habits and beliefs.

Not everyone is as worldly wise as some on this board, and people have to learn and develop.

That said all kinds of errors and faux pas can be made by all at the range.

Once at the local range a savy hunter, gun efficianndo arrived and patiently waited his turn to set up . Once he had his turn to set up he meticiously set up targets at 50,100,300 yards and proceeded back to the shooting bench.
He set up his tool box his shooting bags and spotting scope. He took out his shells and a pad and paper to record all his shooting results.
Once all this was done he uncased his firearm.

By all accounts he looked and acted like a responsible educated knowlegeable gun owner.

However when he uncased his firearm he became visibly upset and
started to berate himself in a loud vocal manner.
When my bro in law asked him what was the matter, this fine gentelman replied that he had"left his bolt in the freezer at home" :bangHead:

all these guys talked about was how big grizzlies are and how they need big guns because the bears are so mean and big. It was pretty funny. When Mr 340 Wby finally got his grouping on paper he said something like "well I know when I hit a grizzly he wont be getting back up" ;)

they were both in their late 30s or early 40s, I dont think they were too keen on taking any tips from a 25 yr old or a 16 yr old :D I tend to just stand back and watch, smiling and nodding with them. When they saw a .82" 7 shot group at 100 meters from my 260 they just about ####. They called it a cute little gun :dancingbanana:
