Range Idiots

I was going to go shooting today, but now am afraid that someone will trash talk me for whatever reason.

Better to stay home and check out the shooting irons in the bush next hunting season.

The squirrels don't care if I have a muzzle brake or not, use the 7 mm mag or the 30.06 or the .303 or the 30-30 and they don't care if I have iron sights or cheap mounts or even a cheap scope. If I swear and blame and the God's for my wandering rounds, they don't care. If I take some kid with me and we atke too long wandering out to set up targets, they appreciate it. They don't care what I wear or what I look like. I can brag to them about 4" groups and they appear suitably impressed.

Ever wonder why some folks stay in the bush?

That pretty well covers most of the reasons I have my 'own" 400m range set up on a nice piece of clear-cut 10 min. from home.
Shooting at a public range usually ends up with me reaching for the ant-acid after dealing with some of the other shooters that can be found there. The young guys who know everything about subjects they have no personal experience with are only trumped by some of the "old" farts who have been doing things wrong for so long they think they are right.

When they saw a .82" 7 shot group at 100 meters from my 260 they just about s**t. They called it a cute little gun :dancingbanana:

Your 260 is a cute little gun, really men shoot a 8mm Rem Mag....

What I find annoying at the range:

1. Muzzlebrakes, I really appreciate getting the muzzleblast from the guy firing next to me...

2. The guy who sets up his targets and will shoot 100 rounds through the same target. You are trying to do load development and taking 5 shot groupings at each target, you need to go and change your targets after 45 minutes and he is upset and doesn't want to break, because he hasn't shot his 100 rounds thru his target yet with his .223 semi auto... He also brings 8 rifles and shoots them all at the same 3 targets.

3. I try and take a day off work and go mid week.... Weekends are just a waste of time at the range.

They probably shop at Lebarons. Every time I go there, some dweeb at the gun counter is trying to convince new hunters the NEED a .300 Ultra Mag for Whitetail or moose...

Funny, but I'll bet all the deer and moose killed by .303 Brit and .30-30 didn't feel underhit.

interesting thread... but back to the start of it....
granted these guys seem to be buying biggest/baddest they can BUT they are at a range trying to improve. so either they'll find some more money for the $90/box ammo or swallow some ego and ask the guy next to him that is driving tacks with an old .303 british for some pointers.
I have friends that don't do any practicing till the week before hunting season opens. then it's just to make sure it shoots. saw one of them miss/wound too many animals so till he shoots some more he is on his own.
just my 2 cents.

I think people today are stupider than they have ever been when it comes to guns, many have not grown up around guns, do not respect them, only know enough to be downright dangerous. Have had to leave the range a couple times when idiots with their semi pistols and black guns decide to have a competition of who can get the most rounds off fastest, get all excited and forget what they are doing and seem to delight in blowing the #### outa whatever they can. I have nothing against black guns, kinda like them, but there seems to be a high percentage of owners that are simply irresponsible in their use of them. Then theres the old guy with the shotgun who when the range is called cold and everyone goes to the target boards decides to walk out in front of the benches, have his grandson throw clays for him and start shooting, when we asked what the hell he was doing he just nonchalantly said not to worry, we were safe as he made sure he was shooting over our heads. There are some real jackasses out there.

I know a guy who is proud that he only needs to take 5 shots a year to sight in his gun. That way he still has fifteen for hunting! Honest to god that is what he told me.....

I especially liked the dudes that would go put up their targets at 200 yards all the while holding their 6 year olds hand on the way out and it being a friggen nature walk all the way there and all the way back. No respect for the guys waiting on the firing line.

There's nothing wrong with that.....

Last week at the range a guy brought his black lab with him.... I had to yell at the mutt a couple times when he was in my line on fire.

At the shooting range

When some ones rifle is shooting all over the place, or the groups (patterns) are pretty bad, here is a suggestion. Say to the fellow, "I had a rifle like that once, let me look at yours, to see if it's the same thing wrong." You look at the rifle, make out like your checking something, and as you give it back you say to the fellow, who is still sitting in the shooting position, "here, I'll load it for you." You pick up one of his shells, but place his rifle in his shooting position with it cocked, but no cartridge in it! When the rifle clicks you will find out a lot.
This happened once to a large man with some type of super magnum. When the rifle clicked, he didn't flinch, he actually jumped back with his shoulder!
I got out of there fast!

ahhh the ole brass instead of bullet trick!!! but it works ...WELL!!
some guys like(last saturday)are brand new to shooting.
a local guy showed up with a brand new tikka t3 30-06 /3200 elite scope. nice set up and only boresighted. we had a shooting bench so we got him to use it.
he liked to yank his head up to "watch the shot". we got him to try and watch the bullet hit the target thru the scope, after that he shot great.
but he mentioned that he thought the gun was ready for hunting after being boresighted.
scary! but there are people out there that do just that.

The worst are some of the guys who know it all, and feel it is their job to police the range. I know we all have our responsiblilties in ensuring the ranges we attend are run smoothly and safely.
One year at the range out by Spruce Grove, I came to the line next to a range hog, all by himself. I did not say a word as I set up several tables away from him. He demanded to see my pass. I assumed he was someone in charge out there, so I showed it to him. He grumbled and moaned, about people who should not be at the range, ect... I never got his point.
Half hour later, another guy shows up. The old guy approaches him, the younger guy tells him to Fock off and leave him alone. I enjoyed that.
Turns out the old guy was just some miserable prik who is likely still out there.
All my years of shooting, hunting and collecting, I have made lifelong friends and some of the best times had were with these people and the sport we share.
But I cannot believe how many assholz who are attracted to the the firearms community. From the guy at the Calagry gunshow screaming at anyone withing range of his table, to the local gun dealer with the I dont care attitude to a couple new shooters, to some of the behaviour we see here on the forum at times.

X 1,000,000!!

These are the guys who caused me to stop going to the sherwood park range. Leave me the f*k alone unless you have CAUSE to pester me. I'm a responsible shooter and I'm not breaking any of the range rules, so I don't want to hear from you. Go away.

we have one of these at the PG range i see often. "blah blah blah, no shooting milk jugs, blah blah, not an aproved target, blah blah, you should know better, balh blah, will take your membership away"

I think he's just jealous my blued/walnut rig shoots smaller groups then his "I want to be a sniper" tactical rig.

oh well ;)

I get that a fair bit at SG gun club. If im standing there having a coffee, come over and chat for a couple minutes.....if Im at the table with my rifle shouldered, hit the road. I dont mind a couple minutes of babble but when someone insists on telling me the whole gdamn process of reloading for a Shnutzen farkenfugger Model 3 I just can't take it. I have walked away from guys out there. I usually dont have all day to hang at the range.

more money than brains on a lot of shooters, that's true. They're s**tty shots because they can't be bothered to practice. They wound or miss a critter that fall and compensate by spending s**tloads of money on gear. I love it when guys at the range tell my that they 'need' their $5000 rigs to bring home the meat.
Yeah ,Then somebody with a beat up ol' Winchester 30-30 worth a hundred bucks brings home a huge buck.

Well the last range visit I made I brought my new, self-assembled rifle, where I installed the action to drop-in stock, bases, rings and scope. Well, practically everything came loose as I worked through sighting-in and barrel break-in. Did not shoot for #### that day..all over the place...

Imagine if I broke out my braked 300 RUM after that...whoa....how the facking rifle know-it-all snobs would have judged me as an idiot that day I am sure...

Lucky for me the guys at my range are a little more relaxed and easy going than that....not that I give a ####e either way.....
