Range Idiots

Well, our range is limited to benchrest precision shooting for the highpowered stuff up to 308 cal.
Aside of that we can shoot any position with air, rimfire, the sub-1500fps centrefire and blackpowder and we aren't very competitive.
Our club was always about zeroing and developing markmanship for hunting and varminting as that's the sort of shooting the bulk of our members do.
Oh, we do shoot little comps but it's friendly and for encouragement.
Speaking to other people the pistol club is ok.
I don't actually know anyone from the trap club.
The F-class and service rifle club on the otherhand is in danger of disappearing into its own navel.
Fees are about $120 a year and they've just become too serious.
There are now only 3 guys shooting service rifle because the F-class shooters are a bunch of tossers.
If the service rifle guys didn't have to pay the $120 and only paid a fee for service rifle there'd be more.
I'd like to shoot service rifle but I won't pay $120 bucks a year to shoot every 3rd Sunday
I presently am a SSAA member which features.....
  • a monthly magazine 11 times a year
  • $10,000,000 liability insurance on all shooting & hunting
  • national membership and entry to ranges all over Australia
  • hunting club membership which flows over into my game licence
And it's only $70 a year.
See my point?
The 300m range capability has just come in so we'll probably start a fairly relaxed service rifle comp in our own club.

If the guns in question had been old and in 308, this thread would not exist. This is "reverse snobbery" - the mistake they made was to have powerful, expensive to shoot guns. This was made worse by the fact that they weren't able to zero in three shots like the experts, so they're also stupid I suppose.
I would tend to agree with you, but there are people who are not very intelligent about their choices in firearms, and lack skill in operation. I do find the story very funny though $95.00 for a box of ammo, I'd go from riches to rags in a few days of fun with that tool...

This is minor, everyone has to start somewhere, It should be mandory requirement by law, where everyone has to learn how to use a gun. Accidents are caused by mistakes, mistakes are cause by not knowing. Learning to sight in a gun should be part of this education. If your going to poke fun at someone it should be the more seriously stupied people who run the country and want to make it so no one will have a chance to sight in a rifle or anything else for this matter. These are the people who think guns kill people, when we all know that bullets do. People are allowed to buy potentially dangerous items without be trained first on how to use them, or what they are capable of, another eg. Superbikes. So say grade 6 you learn the dangers, grade 7 learn what makes them work, grade 8 you learn how to use them and to take care of them, grade 9 you become proficient you don't move on to grade ten until you pass the test. So people with guns are your friends unless there pointing one at you. and in that case make sure all your friends have past grade 10.

Unless one of the shooters you guys are describing turns out to be a real jackass, I usually take some of my precious range time to do a little bit of education. It usually pays in the long run. I have also found that if you are polite and not pushy with the advice they will listen to it. I can't recall the number of times guys I've given five minutes of advice to have come back and told me how much their shooting or sighting-in skills have improved. Nobody had ever bothered to share this knowledge we take for granted with them.

Hey, maybe this should be our new motto; "Weed out the jerks and educate the rest"

I'm open to help & pass on the knowledge that was passed on to me by others..I have a few mentors in the business that brought were I am & always improving.

If you shoot at Genesee or Wildwood..PM me, Myself &/or the crew usually shoots every 2 weekends, if not..

I'll be staffing at Wildwood Service rifle match on sunday, May 13th

I'm into M14's & precision shooting!
