Range Report - 8 different 7.62x39

Feeling a little better about my Chinese ammo purchase. Thanks for the useful info. Just guessing from your name and location, we may have something in common. I am from a little town near Gander NL and am living in North Bay ON. Small world IF I guessed right.

Norris Arm will always be home. Amazing how much freedom I had when it came to firearms, but my SKS will get a workout as soon as I finish my range membership.

Just for info the chinese surplus ammo that I supplied you for testing was a recent purchase from a local gun store. In my SKS it shot much better than the few rounds of Czech I had left from a few years ago. Not very scientific but from memory it shot 2.5 - 3inches versus about 5" for the Czech. Very informative ammo report. Thanks Ganderite

I'm curious about the accuracy of the Restricted vs NR 858. The rifle wasn't originally designed to have a 18.5 inch barrel is it possible that the longer barrel flexes or "whips" like what was an issue with the older Mini 14's before Ruger add the stabilizer.

Why isn't this a sticky? It has the most detailed info I've ever seen on the performance of 7.62x39 which is the definitive "red rifle" round.

Pretty sure it is a sticky,, And I'll add, the one thread I read, re-read many times over. Most of my shooting is SKS 7.62 x 39 so seeing this thread and the results that Ganderite has been able to achieve makes me a believer that the SKS can be a very accurate gun with the right ammo.

Excellent information. When you were loading the 155g Sierra bullets were you using brass or steel cases? If brass, boxer primed, can you point me to a source in Canada? Have you tried pulling the FMJ bullets from surplus ammo and using soft points, if so, any problems with neck sizing or?? Thanks for any info you can provide. My local Cabelas sells only 123g and 209g soft point 7.62 x39 ammo, loaded in steel cases and I would like to use a bullet in the 150g range for deer hunting.

so judging from the head stamp on the chinese cartridge, i'm assuming it's the same chinese copper washed steel core corrosive ammo that i have...sweet, if i recall thats the cheapest stuff on the market too.

Great Post dude, finally I can shut the non-sks believers up at work. However when I did my testing with ammo, (not nearly as intense as your), I shot my best group with the russian, and the worst was the chinese stuff I bought that day for testing. It could be just my sks but it seems odd that all the other ammo's I tried amounted in similiar spec's as yours with the exception of the chinese. However I cant remember the factory. Maybe it was my SKS?

209 grain 7.62x39? I think you are perhaps thinking of 7.62x54.
