Range Report - 8 different 7.62x39

Great report. Was about to order the Polish Mesko, now second thoughts. Didn't see any Bulgarian in the lineup either.

Unless someone else has any good reports on Polish or Bulgarian looks like have to wait for NORC to come back in stock.

Just wondering if I missed something, but isn't 7.62x39 larger diameter than 308? How do you get good groups through a bore that's too small? Or does it just not matter with such a small difference? I assume you just had a 308 match barrel reamed for the red round?

x39 use a .310 dia bullet, it will easily swage down to .308 and remain accurate. I've read that going the other way (.308 in a .310 bore) can work as well, but I've no first hand experience with that.

It is a 308 barrel with a 7.62x39 chamber. The chamber has a long gentle throat to accommodate 155gr match bullets and to swadge down the fatter .310 milsurp bullets. Wokrs just fine.

so me getting 2-2.5 or so "'s @ 110Yards isn't that bad with milsurp ammo?

I have the exact same copper washed colored unmarked 7.62x39 rounds shown here.

Im not sure if i can blame the ammo or what but i expected better.

I shot some purple/pink colored ammo prior to this that seemed to group much much better.

I guess i should just ask.

Is their specific Surplus ammo in 7.62x39 that is best of all or better than others?
Perhaps their is specific Milsurp ammo you can recommend to others here for best accuracy.
Unfortunatly i have like 1440 Rounds of this other stuff atm lol.

If I was going to buy surplus today, I would look for Chinese.

@Ganderite - yea this copper washed is definitely junk sometimes it groups good and then often you will see just fliers that go far from normal point of impact.
Stuff like that bugs me i know its cheap and i know its milsurp but i still hate when random rounds fly far from where they should.

Thanks for this! Lots of interesting data. I'm more of a plinker but it's a good reference for anybody who is serious about their accuracy.

Excellent information. When you were loading the 155g Sierra bullets were you using brass or steel cases? If brass, boxer primed, can you point me to a source in Canada? Have you tried pulling the FMJ bullets from surplus ammo and using soft points, if so, any problems with neck sizing or?? Thanks for any info you can provide. My local Cabelas sells only 123g and 209g soft point 7.62 x39 ammo, loaded in steel cases and I would like to use a bullet in the 150g range for deer hunting.

209 grain 7.62x39? I think you are perhaps thinking of 7.62x54.

yes, it was 7.62 x 39 ammo, PRIVI brand, I believe, in either 123g or 209g, on Monday past.
Sorry, I gotta go with saskcop. I figured I pushed the envelope with 174gn RN handloads. I don't believe that PRVI loads a 209gn bullet in a 7.62x39mm case. If it was a spitzer point, it wouldn't fit in the magazine before you were crimping on the ogive. A RN bullet would be the same, I would think, but, I'll have to check that.
Also, I can't find any evidence from retailers on either side of the border that they import 209gn x39mm and your particular Cabela's must be a one-of, since PRVI ammo isn't in ANY calibre or cartridge in their catalogue. If you could get more info, I'd love to shoot some. Hmmmmm, a 209gn bullet leaving the barrel at 1800fps (thinking, here) would probably have 1700fps at 100 yds, retain well over a thousand ft/lbs of energyPRVI makes great ammo and a 209gn lead pill would be just the medicine for a 0-75yd animal.

I appreciate the info shared on the test results from various SKS caliber rifles and the sorts of Ammo used in the testing. I've shot SKS and always arrived at the conclusion that they are too inaccurate for my liking and are unworthy of owning and shooting. Yet I understand why shooters like them (price) and the ammo (price) that's available for the SKS. I do like the 7.63 x 39 cartridge and it's abilities but would only consider some sort of bolt configuration where decent accuracy is achievable.
