Range Report Ruger Redhawk 44 mag with 4.2 inch barrel.. RANGE REPORT POST #41

You might find the rubber grips a bit narrow with full powered loads. If so, keep an eye out for a set of factory wood stocks, I found these handle recoil quite well, with more comfort than rubber or worse yet, rubber with wood inserts stocks. The Redhawk grip frame doesn't seem to need the additional support above the middle finger provided by target grips the way a S&W does. But there is such a difference the the size and shape of people's hands that it id dangerous to make blanket statements about gun fit.

you may find that you don't care for the 4.2- i don't - you need a certain amount of barrel to maintain "balance" - with the 38/357, it's 4 inch , with the 44 it's more like 5-6, esp with full house loads- that's why most people with 2-3 inch 357 snubbies shoot 38 spcl or +p - the 357 becomes a real barker with a 2 inch barrel- same deal with the 44- shoot spcls you're ok, but move into full house loads and you need that 5 inch barrel, imo

The most ordinary Winchester 240 gr. you can find. With the grips you have you should be alright, but mine (wooden grips) holds my middle finger rather tightly between it and the trigger guard so when the gun flips it's like very quickly twisting a pair of soft metal pliers over your finger...

I know exactly what you mean there, the model 29-3 i had used to do that to my finger, was not a pleasure to shoot at all, but ive had no issues with the hogue grips as they eliminated that problem.

Since I'm not 12(6) the 4.2" is the shortest I could get in a revolver. Besides, the short bbl looks so Bada$$ on a large frame.
If I could I would get the 2.5" Super Redhawk Alaskan .45LC/.454Casull:)

I was on a waiting list for over a year and no concrete delivery date. Every" 6-8wks expected delivery date" came and went.
A fellow CGNer found one locally. Shot a box and decided it wasn't for him. I jumped all over it when he told me it was for sale. I cancelled my order and used the deposit for another toy.

Hey Johnto! Glad to see you finally scooped one up :D . I am still on that damn waiting list, with the same "4 - 6 week speech". They look beautiful guys, I am oozing with jelousy.

Can't wait to post my pics in "4 - 6 weeks".... :HR:

Hey, I got a favour to ask.... Would one of you be willing to do an HD movie of the gun up close? You know, different angles, open the cylinder, cocking, de-cocking and maybe a dry fire.

It would sure help lower my anger level if I could imagine it in my safe :) There is not one good review and up close vid on youtube of the 4" or the 4.2".

Yeah that's probably my next purchase; Hogues in checkered kingwood. Black rubber gives better grip and looks mean but it can't beat wood for the gorgeous factor. :D

I haven't shot the gun yet but man, tearing chucks off your hands lol. Ive had 3 44 mags previous to this one, two 629's and one 29-3 and nothing ripped flesh off my hands. You guys reloading or what, i just use factory ammo.

I know Remington makes a vey hot factory load I use to shoot outta my DE. Made a 50cal look like a pea shooter, 12" muzzle flash and a sound wave that almost made you feel like someone slapped you

....I got lucky finding one too! My 13 month wait(ordered) is finally over when I found a private sale(thanks Jorg)
