A shooting buddy brought a couple of .458 mags to the range today and 3 of us had a blast shooting them .:D
There was a Winchester Model 70 and a Brno 602 and we took turns shooting 350 grain and 510 grainers out of it.:eek:
The 350's were pretty easy off the sandbags but the 510's were a little tougher but very manageable after a few shots. :eek: (Maybe cuz of the numbness):)
It was raining sideways with lots of wind and one of the shooters said "we must be crazy to be here today". And I got to thinking that I was the first at the range today, but good times were had by all despite the weather and maybe the chronie will work next time.:p I think dry batteries might work better.:D The .458 sure makes little rocks outta big ones fast...........:)

We were getting better than minute of bunny at 75 yards today. :D We shot with open sights and it was point of aim for me with both weights of bullets.:) We set up rocks and put a piece of target paper for an aiming point and made big rocks into gravel...............damn now I gotta buy one.:eek:
 
I can't wait to shoot my gong with one of those 510gr bunny stoppers:D
I'll try and get video of it......

Everybody needs at least one 458WM:)

I had a Brno 602 in .458, and I could get about 1" (3 shot) groups at 100 Metres.
I refered to the 405 grain loads as "plinker" loads;)
 
I just checked out ammo prices. I though you guys were full of crap. I have a 458 but frankly don't remember what the ammo cost. I needed ammo, so I bought it. The theives want damned near $100 for a box of Federal Premiums! It's still not as bad as my 416 Rigby, but damn! Obviously been a while since I hit the ammo counter...and at those prices it'll be a damned bit longer!

I purchased a .458 Win mag for a buffalo hunt in Africa. Tried many loads but the 500 grain Hornady's with Win brass, F 215 cap, 74 grains of H 335, and a stout crimp ala Lee factory crimp die was the best load. Used separate seating dies for the solids and softs. Point of impact between the solids and softs was about an inch at 100 yards. I can put 3 solids and 3 softs inside a hockey puck at 100 yards with this load.

We'll have to get out & 'make gravel' again, right soon.:) Loaded a few, five only, Hornady 500gr RN to test. 70gr of IMR 3031, WW cases & CCI 250 primers. Cleared a few cobwebs. The Zkk 602 Brno I 'might' sell you handles the recoil a little better than the model 70. One shot I wasn't holding the model 70 tight enough and it 'bit' me.:redface:
Got some new cast bullet loads to try. Got them going a little slower than the first batch. Be interesting to see how they work out.:) Then I'll try some of the gas check bullets next. Some more loads to try, I want to see how the Hornady 500 FMJ-RN's print compared to the 500gr RN's. Picked up some Hornady 350gr FP's but I'll try them after the cast loads. $100.00/box for Federal Premium's? $51.00 from Russel's? Good reminder of why I reload.:D
Love the term, "minute of a hockey puck". I'll have to remember that one. Sort of like "making gravel".:cool:
On the Brno, that might be up for sale,;) I've added a fibre optic bead to the front sight. Looks good. Can't wait to see how it actually works.
 
With the greatest respect, guys, generally rocks are not considered good targets no matter what you are launching at them downrange, for fear of ricochet. So we all know you were just kidding about shooting rocks, and the younger folks reading this can know that it was just a joke, so they don't go into their back forty (or their local range) and start shooting at rocks with their shootin' irons.........

I owned a Ruger 77 Mark I for four rounds. Handloads courtesy of Casull here on the board, who sold me the gun. Cast bullets about half the size of a Scheider's Red Hot hot dog sticking out the end of the case, and the gun made a swooshing sound when I opened the bolt, from the air rushing in......

Four rounds with the .458, or four rounds with George Foreman, about the same feeling....
