So I often get a question at the gun counter. Is model A worth the few bucks more than model B?

I tend to believe that pretty much every brand on the shelf today is "accurate" and built well enough (considering). Since when I handle them I can say that I like this feature on this one, or prefer the trigger or safety on that one, but in reality, in similar (price point) rifles, I don't really see why one is 100 bucks more than the other.

So I'm looking for some opinions here. I already assume that these all shoot "just fine", so not really looking for "I can shoot the eye out of a mouse at 200 yards", just looking for "value for money".

I have chose 4 models that fall into the 900-1200'ish retail range, so not your bargain basement or starter guns - the rifles that a guy/gal will come in looking at to "upgrade" to.

The current trend on the "want list" seems to be the black composite stocked, stainless rifles, so here is the contenders:

What my real question is - when Jack or Jill comes in and checks these over, what's the answer to "why is the Browning 300 bucks more than the Remington" - they look pretty much the same?

So what say you? What's the answer and how would you rate these four rifles in terms of "value for the money"?? Regardless of what you may "think" of a Rem 700 SPS is a Browning X-Bolt really 300 bucks "more gun" or is there a premium for the name built in there?

1 Browning
2 Tikka
3 Remington
4 Savage

Features for the $300 higher price over the Rem?
-Decent Stock and factory bedded
-1/2lb lighter
-60 degree bolt lift (better scope clearance)
-Actual bottom "metal" (Rem does have metal)
-Machined recoil lug
-Great mag system
-Better made product than the Rem IMO (Hand chambered, Air gauged barrel)

On the list, the Tikka gets my vote as well. Another to consider would be the Sako A7. Can even get the pkg set with Burris 3-9 scope. I picked one up for my nephew in June on sale for about $1130 all in with GST.

Tikka/ Sako have detachable mags., so does Browning and some Savage models too. Savages have a sloppy action (if you like sloppy, me I prefer tight, silky smooth-Tikka/Sako) IMO, but are good shooters.

Try them all see what shoulders up to you the best.

Thanks GMC403, you got to the point I was asking.

While I can appreciate that some of you have a "preference" for say the Tikka over everything else, I wasn't looking for "more people prefer the Tikka" when the question I get is -

Since you prefer the Tikka, what makes it "worth 100 bucks more" than the Remington and if it's so great why is it 200 bucks cheaper than the Browning?

Tikka's are like Iphones. Everyone has one because everyone else has one, and they just plain work.

$100 more because the Tikka has a drop mag, Better barrel IMO, it's almost 1lb lighter, and a smoother action.
$200 cheaper because there is no bottom metal, less finishing (Bedding), and you're most likely paying for the Browning name.

I like the Tikka, and if the A7 was on the list id take that over the Browning

Tikka
Browning
Savage
Remington

I sure don't care for the X-Bolt in stainless and Tupperware look though.
I too would suggest the Vanguard Series.

When asked, just have the customer cycle the bolt on each. They'll be leaving with the Tikka or Browning...and I'll take the Tikka

...in fact I DID take the Tikka :)

This , a rachety , click- clack noisy bolt is a bad thing considering deer can hear everything . The tikka is good once it's got some butter slathered on it but I'd go browning out of the box.

^^^This

I have a T3 in 30-06. Great, accurate, lightweight walking rifle. So lightweight that it kicked pretty bad for a 06. A $50 Limbsaver cured that.

Of the 4 the Browning is the nicest, just the least gunsmith friendly.

I don't have a problem with the Tikkas but wouldn't own a light T3 in a magnum caliber...too much recoil for me.

Also methinks the price of them should be half given their construction.
