RANT......Hey Westerners what the hell is a ky-ute?????

Why not call a a ruffed grouse a ruffed grouse, ruffy? I wouldnt call a horse a donkey or a goose a swan. Especially wen using two animals that are similar in appearance.

People call deer "jumpers", moose "swamp donkeys", walleye "pickerel" and pronghorn "speed goats". I still know what they're talking about. It's not really that big of a deal.

Maybe the best bet is to refer to them by their Latin taxonomic term to avoid confusion. It'll also make you sound like this guy. ;)

30-06 designates a cartridge. The caliber is .308".

Actually SJ, .308 is not a caliber, it is a bullet diameter for a 30 caliber firearm. Calibers are always expressed with 2 digits, if you care to look up correct firearms nomenclature. And yes 30-06 does in fact designate a complete cartridge, however the first 2 digits, do in fact, designate the caliber.

Yeah, nicknames. I'm talking about calling an animal by another animals name, calling it a partridge is like calling a deer a pronghorn, a moose a caribou or a Chevy a Ford(I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned....) I've heard more people get their panties in knot over the pickerel thing than grouse vs partridge. They are walleye, plain and simple. A type of perch, not pickerel. I've never understood why they call them pickerel as about all they have in common is water and find and you can catch them side by side with a real pickeral(pike). Why not just call them by their normal names instead of the names of similar animals. Sounds like when a girl Points at a corvette and says nice mustang, there both cars right?

If we're going to be sticklers, let's start with grammar. "They are" would become "they're". :)

There is only one right way to pronounce "coyote"...

...pronounce it "DEAD"

And no, I'm not for the total eradication of them, that's not even possible by hunting. There are currently crazy high coyote numbers around these parts.

Everyone around here just calls them yotes (pronounced yoats). Only time I have heard Kyute is from our American neighbours. People here using the full name say coyote (ki-yoat). As for my pronunciation, when in Rome....

Here's Ian Tyson for you. :)

Grizz

Ruffed Grouse = Bush Partridge
Sharp tailed Grouse = Prairie Chicken.

Right on! I was scolded on here some time ago by one of the royalty for using "bush partridge". Pickerel, jack, kyute, gopher, prairie chicken. People around where I live seem to know what those terms mean. No language police here. I would love to see how well they would do here.
