RANT......Hey Westerners what the hell is a ky-ute?????

After 14 pages about my post I'd just like to say this. It was mainly a comment in jest, and meant to spark some conversation but now it's what many consider to be a feud between East and West.

I read along about how we need unity and brotherhood in the hunting community, Agreed
My question to all of you that posted, have you ever thought about what you sound like to the non hunting public when we "poorly speak" about the sport we are all so passionate about?
We as hunters most often get painted with the uneducated slob hunter brush! Why not pronounce the animals name correctly to the nonhunting portion of the population as to not reinforce the stereotype? That was really my point. Jason Peterson I'm sure is a great guy, but as he has a TV program about hunting... does he not have a bit larger responsibility to portray a bit more intellect when he speaks on a broadcasted TV show. Then again don't we all, regional accent be dammed.
 
I never thought of it as an East West thing. I learned how to pronounce it from cartoons when I was about four years old and it has stuck with me. Song dogs is probably the most annoying to me.
 
When you manage to get everyone to stop calling ruffed grouse partridges, and sharptailed grouse prairie chickens, then worry about pronunciation. And I have heard people from all across Canada refer to ruffed grouse at partridge. At least out West we describe our deer as 4x4 or 5x5 etc, instead of calling them an 8 or 10 point, to try and make them sound larger.:)

Ya, we got you the first time......

And referring to a deer that has 8 points on his rack as a "4 pointer" makes about as much sense as calling a 4 wheeler a 2 wheeler or a 2x2.....

Coyote is a Spanish term, interpretation of the pronunciation is liberal and at the mercy of the speaker :)

I have never understood why they are counted in two differing ways? Only thing I can think is because for so many years western regulations refer to legally allowable harvested ungulates in many areas as requiring "x" number of points on one side? Personally I feel the rack on top of an animals head is a one piece part of the animal, not two separate parts so if you count all the points and they add up to say 9 for example then to me it has 9 points whether they be 7 on one side and 2 on the other or any other combination. There are 9 so he was a 9 point animal. Heck if a woman has one breast larger than the other I don't refer to her for example as a 36 C x D?! I just run with the true bra size or in this example 36D because like any true hunter I want rack size bragging rights!!

I find this stuff fun and not fuel for bicker, but fuel for banter. Really don't think they're counting both sides to make them sound bigger, there's logic to that too and really no misrepresentation. Regionalisms keep things interesting, especially on a forum where we can only do .30-06 vs .300 so many times. :)

In BC it goes one further, just one side's points describe the deer, straight from the source- the regs. The 6x6 6x7 etc does trickle into BC on Elk, but they're all still defined by the single best antler here legally.

Lumber is specified by dimension, originally 2 inches by 4 inches.
For antlers, you count the points. Even in Alberta hunting regulations, the number of points on one antler are specified for Elk.
Stating 4x4 is multiplication when counting anything. It equals 16.
You are counting, aren't you?
4+4 would make more sense.

How so?.... the deer in your example are 8 and 10 pointers...... how is your description better?

Most, if not all things that are numbered in description work this way....

Revolver - 6 shooter
Atv - 4 wheeler (not 2x2)
Engine - V6 (not 3x3)
Truck - 18 wheeler (not 9x9)

I could go on......

And your 2x4 analogy just proves the point..... a 2x4 is called a 2x4 because it refers to the surface area of the cut end..... (even though 2x4 are no longer 2x4)... it's called a "two by four" with the word "by" inferring multiplication..... Same as a 4x8 sheet of plywood...

In reality, I think local dialects and differences are cool...... I have a drawl local to my rural area, and I am am proud of it...... if you want to say 5x5, I know what you mean just like you know what I mean when I say 10 pointer......

Problems and conflicts don't start because people are different, that's what makes life interesting..... conflicts start when a person insists that only they are right.....

actually it 's 1 7/8ths- the 2 comes from the width of the board and the width CUT OF THE SAW-I used to be a ripper in the industry

don't forget the length.. I heard a rumor though that its not as important as the width.
