Action: Terminus Apollo Lite (short action)

Barrel: BSF 20" 308win

Muzzle Device: v7 Weapon Systems Titanium Furion

Stock: AG Composites Alpine Hunter (non adjustable)

Trigger: Triggertech rem700 Special

Bottom Metal: Hawkins Precision Hunter DBM

Optic: Vortex LHT 3-15x42mm



This would be an all around <300m deer/bear rifle. It should weight about 8.5-9lb when finished. I will only be shooting factory ammo through it which is why I chose a CF barrel (better accuracy with untuned loads). The action is a 3 lug 60° throw which should be smooth as butter and it will be carried slung with an adjustable 2 point sling. I pack hunt and live in my boots.

Let me know what you all think about a setup like this.

I kid, it sounds like a nice carrying gun,

But I prefer some stock adjustment for positional shooting.
 
I have been using it on my current rifle and it is a DECENT optic. I don't do a lot of dialing and the glass is acceptable. All that being said I will be looking a leupold vx6hd 3-18x50 with tmoa reticle.
 
Nice build. The only one that can “rate” your build is you. It’s not what I would build or want but my build probably won’t interest you. If your happy at the end, things are roses all around.
 
I would think an AG privateer or all terrain style stock would be a little less bulky and lighter for a packing setup, especially for under 300m. I think of the alpine hunter as a long range style build.

I would suggest building a rifle that weighs less.

You might thinks it OK at first, but I'd bet that before long you will tire of it and it will be left in the safe and preference given to a lighter rifle that is more fun to carry. You will then be stuck with a very expensive rifle and wonder why you had it built ...... BTDT.
 
For those saying to go lighter, what weight is acceptable for a pack rifle? Right now I'm packing one thats 12.5lbs all said and done and obviously its much too heavy for extended treks.

I'm set on using a CF barrel which averages about 2.5lbs.
I'm also fairly set on using a 3-15 or 3-18 for an optic.
The only other place I could save weight would be the stock and the action.
If I went to a lone peak titanium I could save 7oz on the action.
If I went to a carbon all terrain I'd save another 4oz.

Is the 3/4lb of savings worth it?
I chose the alpine hunter for the higher cheek weld and more vertical firing grip. The action could be swapped to the lonepeak dispite the extra cost.

I'm happy to hear these comments as this is the reason I posted the thread. I'm fairly new to all this so I'm glad to hear feedback.

I think that most would say to stay bellow 8 lbs for sure all in… and some would say to stay bellow 7 lbs! I think anything bellow 8.5 lbs is ok!

There are many options out there to use for a LW rifle. As you are only expecting to be shooting 300yds or less, this makes it a very easy task to pc together that will be much lighter but you might have to change your specs to achieve that goal. Starting with a smaller scope like a 2.5-8 (lots for your distance) will be a very easy place to save weight and money. The list goes on and on. A simple short action M700 in a lightweight Wildcat stock with a 700 Mountain Rifle contour bbl and you're way closer to a lighter rifle for a lot less money. You won't have the branding appeal of all your listed components but you WILL have a rifle you will enjoy carrying and one that will fully do the task you require and you will spend a lot less doing it.

In my mind, a 7.5lb scoped rifle is getting to be lightweight.
 
I would save the coin on the break. Never found them that necessary on 308s, but you can always add it later. Just going to drive up the noise for you.
