RC K98s at Fishing World... $599

I asked if I could sort through their K98s, I was told I could view the ones on the shelf, that was it.

Their loss. I offered a premium on a few rare guns, and I would have done the searching.

Pretty much every gun store is the same. I was surprized that they allowed me to select from the 6 they had remaining... however, if those 6 were still in the crate, I doubt I would have been given the option to sort through them.

Just got a shooter's choice flyer today - wow. $525 RC 98's and $795 S&W Model 629's with 4.2" barrel. Great prices.

They only have two, and they're selling them at that price because they've sat there for the last half-year.

Despite what some might say, that is a legitimate course of action. Not far different than stripping varnish off a lee enfield to make it look more original.

Some may differ in their views.

These can turn out pretty darn nice. When RC's were common 5-6 years ago I refinished a bunch of RC's. It was a process of fitting correct bands to the correct year of production, removing the schellac off the stock, removing the blue from the butt plate/stock take down disc, etc....
The result was a M/M but 'proper' looking K98.

In hindsight I somewhat regret refinishing those rifles and any RC's I pick up now stay in their RC configuration. RC's tell a neat story and barrel/receiver data have hugely assisted with the documentation of K98 production.

Those of us owning an RC K98 rifle are holding a piece history. That's how I feel about them, anyway. Guys like me are responsibe for sure for the marked increase in pricing over the years.

That's not really fair. If you can look them over, some are much nicer than others. Many though, I would agree, are pretty rough.

They are what they are, but being redipped, having met the fate of the belt sander on the stock, Ivans unsteady hand of the electropencil, the shellac painter, mismatched, .... rode hard....put away wet....

Someone has to stir the pot! LOL

What SC had in stock, though, I wouldn't even hang on my wall without a restoration. They were that bad.
