Re-barrel / Re-chamber a Ross 1905

1905 barrels have been cut off, and the breech turned into a bushing, with a new barrel installed. The catch is that the shank diameter of the new barrel will limit the choice of cartridges.
II** and 1910 Ross barrels have conventional square threads, so do not present the challenge that a 1905 does. The barrel faces do have eccentric cuts, though.
Then there is the issue of magazine feed. .303 based cartridges would avoid magazine problems.

This is why reboring might be an option. If you can find someone doing rebores.

I've seen varying reports online of the ability of jdj cartridges to feed in .303 magazines. Does anyone have actual experience it seems to be largely hearsay.

Does anyone make a sporter style stock for the ross? One like the user pmtauk (sp?) made is the stuff dreams are made of.

so I thought I would bring up a zombie thread just to see where this project ended up.

I can't even remember. I think this project rifle is what ended up turning into my heavy barrel project. Either that or it turned into the second sporter I finished up.

You're lucky I skim over the gunsmithing section once in a while :d

I still have a Jury barrel sitting on my table. Already threaded, but just not cut to length or chambered yet. It's got a bunch of parts surrounding it, maybe enough for one more sporting rifle.

conor_90 - saw your ad for a rechambered Ross...
M10 (.280) rifles have been rebarrelled to different belted magnum calibers. Boltface works, and the Mauser type magazine makes it easier.

Do you have pictures of either rifle?

I do.....

One advantage of the unusual breech of the 1905 Ross is that barrels can be interchanged without any machining. 1905 barrels with spoiled bores aren't uncommon. A rebore would be quite practical.

A year ago a barrel guy here in Central AB made a new barrel for a Ross 1905 .............Bob Jury maybe check with him.

I sent Bob the original Ross barrel to copy for profile, and he did a fine job as I ordered 3 blanks from him. I believe he posted a pic on Facebook when he had my old Ross barrel, to show off the unusual threads. He still has that barrel, come to think of it.

Bob only uses stainless steel now, so I haven't ordered any new blanks lately.

The sporter I posted has a Jury barrel. I have another completed sporter with a Jury barrel and the third Jury barrel is sitting on my table, already threaded. The heavy barrel is a Bevan King barrel I found on the EE a few years ago. At least that's what it was sold to me as.
