1905 barrels have been cut off, and the breech turned into a bushing, with a new barrel installed. The catch is that the shank diameter of the new barrel will limit the choice of cartridges.
II** and 1910 Ross barrels have conventional square threads, so do not present the challenge that a 1905 does. The barrel faces do have eccentric cuts, though.
Then there is the issue of magazine feed. .303 based cartridges would avoid magazine problems.
