Re-chamber from 7-08 to.....

unless you are a leftie Kimber is a very good option. but i have seen people at the range not able to shoot theirs. they are light ... i think most of the problems is coming from being a light rifle and lack of technique ....

In a rem 700 short action, optimistically you will get 100fps gain with a 140gr VLD type bullet with the 284 vs the 7-08 in your rifle. With anything above that it's almost a wash. 160gr's will probably shoot the same fps at max loads with same powders more or less.
WSM will perform better, but you would likely be better off selling yours and buying a factory WSM.

If it is only 100fps difference I would just ai the 7mm-08 you'll gain that 100 fps right there.

As said before.... Not interested at all in a Kimber. Don't like them, not my thing. And the action on the standard mountain isn't titanium to the best of my knowledge I believe it's standard barstock.

I thought that I may get up to 250+ faster out of a .284 and maybe 300+ out of a WSM. I am currently running my 7-08 145 at 2710fps. Maybe I am dreaming on the velocity??? I would expect a 100fps gain out of an Ackley, but really hoping for input on these two choices, or a similar alternate 7mm out of a SA... If I decide to go LA, it will be a 7RM or a 7LRM. But as stated before, looking to keep my current base for the build.

Not really Looking to do a 6.5 build. I like the 7mm for hunting bullet selection. The 6.5's are pretty sweet, but they aren't in the cards yet, maybe when the 243 is ready for a swap, 6.5 for the misses rifle.

7 SAUM.

More efficient than WSM. Case length is 2.035 vs 2.100wsm and 2.170 .284win. So seating bullets isnt going to rob you of near as much powder. Definite advantage over 7-08. Norma made 300saum brass which can be necked down to 7mm. Again read the comparisons on the 6mm website.

Keep your Remmy chambered for a Remmy cartridge.

Don't forget to have fun,

Willy

At equal pressures, the 284 can easily achieve 100 FPS more than the 7mm-08. At most, the 7mm-08 AI will better the 7mm-08 by 50 fps.

Just had a detailed look at the SAUM, that may be the ticket. Little less powder, longer neck, equal velocities, slightly less recoil and the general consensus that I may get a slightly longer throat life.... What's not to like. Looks like we may have a possible winner.

Thanks Willy.

Ok just to let you know my two cents. My go to rifle for the past number of years is a model 7 s/s with a 20" barrel started life as a 7mm08. It was rechambered to .284 win before I bought it. I wouldn't trade it for any other hunting gun, rain or shine, dogging, still hunting or in a stand. Have not even played with many loads, I run 145 Speer grand slams for moose and any normal bullets for deer. 46 grains of IMR 4320 for powder. Plan to make a 24" barrelled .284 for longer range performance. Hope this helps.
