Real CGN-wildcat-thread-soon-to-be-forum

Are there any wildcat pistol cartridges made from cut down 223 casings?

I cut a 223 casing in half about 23mm from the base of the rim and then measured the inside diameter of the casing which turns out to be around 8.5mm. Is this something that has already been done or am I thinking up something new. Basically I am thinking of a magnum pistol catridge that spans the calibre gap between 9mm and 32 cal but hits like the 9mm or harder.

One would prolly have to use H110 or some other magnum powder to get that kind of performance.

Any thoughts?

p.s. I would still like to see a magnum 32 cal pistol cartridge based on the 32 french long...just elongated to around 23mm
p.p.s. BTT :D

peckerwood, the 9X23 would be the closest 'commercial' product. Winchester designed a very strong case in the 9X23 so that it could withstand elevated pressures in race guns. Didn't catch on but the case is a good one.

I have no way of knowing if the 9X"223 short" would be stronger but the concept is already out there. A simple reaming would open up that case to hold a9mm bullet.

Shooters are doing the same thing with 308 brass to make very strong 45ACP ammo. However, I question the benefit now that there is 45Super/Rowland and other similar brass ready to load.

Thanks for the info guys...is there anything to the 35 calibre S&W...I am aware that it is a rimmed or semirimmed cartridge but I don't have any info on it's ballistic performance or loads.

Anyone?

Has anyone ever seen one of these?....it is a 25 acp casing necked down to 224 and loaded with a 55 grain 224 projectile...very reminiscent of the 5.45x18mm no?

Taken from the website I found it at:
224 Montgomery

I was scrounging through a desk drawer the other day and came across a 224 Montgomery cartridge that I hadn’t seen in probably five years. Tim Montgomery is the guy that runs our marksmanship program and is one of those tireless workers that keeps doing his thing year after year for IHMSA and doesn’t get a darn thing out of it, except perhaps grief.

Anyway, Tim, who likes to have fun with things, cooked up this idea for this new cartridge for his TC. Basically, it’s a 25 ACP necked down to .224 inches. Last time I talked to Tim about this inspiration (some time ago), he said he could get sub one inch groups on a still day at 100 yards. A typical load for the Montgomery is 1.8 grains of Bullseye, or 2 grains of Unique with a 40 grain Hornady V-Max or a Nosler 40 grain boat tail. Considering that there are 7000 grains in a pound of powder, a can of Bullseye will last a long time.

These loads will produce around 1300 feet per second out of his 1:12 twist barrel. I imagine that Tim is probably getting around 1800 fps with the newer 35 and 33 grain bullets from Hornady and Speer now. Then there’s also the 30 grain Berger which would be perfect for the little case. I’ll bet a TC chambered in the Montgomery would be perfect for shooting rats down at the local dump. Little noise, no recoil, and deadly accurate.

I have owned at least twenty wildcats over the years, all the way from 223 Ackley Imp to the 35 Mashburn Super magnum, a 35 on a blown out H&H case.

The first one I ever had was a rechambered Model 98, 8mm-06 Imp that Earl Leech in Ontario did for me. It had a radiused shoulder like the Wby cartidges.

The next one I had was a 303 Epps that Elwood himself did up on a No 4 Mk1*

The most interesting one was a 25-222 Rem Magnum. It was exceptionally accurate, and a pound of powder sure lasted a long time.

The one that got the most increase in velocity was a 250-3000 Imp that PO himself built for me on a Rem 600 action. He also did the 25-222 mag. I have had Bevan King build two more 250 Imps over the years.

Have shot some more owned by others, including a 22 K Hornet and 450 Ackley Magnum that River Rat owned.

Again, wildcats are fun!:D

.338-06 being done at Corlanes, on a Rem 700 BDL, should be back in a couple weeks. when that get's back I have a P14 Action going to Bevan King to become a 303/25.

Thinking about a 6.5-06 light weight moutain rifle recently..... who knows... need a handgun first :D

i'm getting me a Austrailan 25-303 wildcat built on a No.1 Mk 3

303/25 is what the Aussies/kiwi's call it. very popular down-under. using a No.1/No.4 will limit your velocities quite a bit. Give Kombi a PM, he shoots one too.

Bevan has that 25-303 Epps reamer.
That cartridge is every bit as good or better than a 257 Bob especially on a 14 action.
Rich

Bevan barrelled up a 25-303 Imp for me about 25 years ago on a No4 Mk1. I used it as a single shot because I could not get the formed cases to feed from the magzine.

It was amazingly accurate! Used my 250-3000 Ackley Imp dies to neck size and seat bullets, and half inch groups at 100 yds were routine.

It was limited as to pressures, of course, because of the stretch in the Lee-Enfied action, but would still get 100 gr bullets going over 3100 with good case life.

I always wondered what it would do in a stronger action.

Have you had one on the P14, Rich?

The 7-57 ackley is a great round, why not have the chamber reamed, buy a set of dies and you will see a great improvment.

Thanx Reb

Why isn't this a thread all to it's own yet...are the Mods(notice the capitalization) waiting for a post count first, or is there some other sinister plot at hand I wonder?

:D <==Smile added for positivity

I suppose with the post count now exceeding the entire "Tools and Accesories" section (contains "Optics", "Edged Tools and Weapons" and "Gear and Accessories"), that any required postcount threshold has been exceeded. Wildcats seem more pertinent to a gun forum than, for example throwing or display knives, so it can't be an issue of relevancy.

With its own area of course it would thrive.

Has anyone actually made a formal request? Perhaps there is a good (technical?) reason.
