So walked into a gun store on my travels and sitting there was a scope and mount that stated they were for a K98. The picture of the mount didn't turn out but it's an LSR type that mounts to the side. I can't say for sure if it's a K98 mount though. On the underside it looked like a groove with "teeth" inside? I've never seen a K98 LSR mount in person. I didn't see any marks except someone scribbled an number on the bottom with an engraver type of thing. That being said the patina seemed to be the same as the scope.

The scope was variable. If I remember correctly the three marking were 3 3/8, 4 1/2, and 5 1/2? The glass was REALLY clear as I looked through and moved the variable.

They wanted $430 for the scope and the mount. I can't find any info on the scopes though and don't know if the mount is actually for a K98 or not unless someone can post a picture of the bottom one for me :D

1920's or30's scope and appears to be a short side rail mount in this picture . I would say hunting scope possibly use by the military.

So, post war scope - Yes.

Could be a re-used LSR mount, but commercial rifles has similar SSR/LSR mounts, so hard to say.

If a real LSR mount I would pay you to buy the package and you can keep the scope. I have an LSR K98 missing a proper mount, but I do have the proper scope.

So is it post WWII? Because on three forums I have people stating before WWII and after. Also I took another look at the mount. Either commercial or reproduction as the rings aren't one piece. The have each a single screw on one side of the mount?

IMHO, postwar because of the variable power.
Mount could be from before, during, or after. Mounts could be from another country too, Czech, France, Austria, Alsace, Hungary...etc.

Lots of European Oma's have been clearing out deceased Opa's closet of his dusty hunting gear.

Since it is a sidemount(?) it could have been on another rifle, split bridge, like a Mannlicher, Carcanno, Gewehr 88 etc

I think ,C.P. Goerz was bought out by Zeiss before WWII. although they may have still manufactured in the U.S.

Correct. I just read that the german company joined with zeiss in 1926. Now the american company stay as goerz until 1972. That being said this scope is berlin stamped so it was made before 1930. After that there was no goerz production in germany. Yet at the same time from my understanding Variable scopes weren't in production until the mid to late 40s?

Figured I'd try firing off a message to Zeiss and see what they can tell me about the history of the Berlin Goerz factory since they bought the controlling share of the company in 1926 and supposedly shut the place down.

Interesting isn't it? :)
Same as Leitz Canada was a subdivision of Leica, as was the Swiss optical company Kern.

Yes it is. I talked to someone in the Camera world who collects Goerz camera lenses. He told me that after 1930 all lenses and scopes would have been marked Goerz and with the Zeiss/Ikon logo. He looked at the picture I took and there is no Zeiss logo so in his opinion the scope was made before or immediately after the buy out.

There is a guy from Germany on ebay he sales lots of german scopes. Try typing german scope or german sniper scope, try to contact him he knows a lot about German Optics

Semi Blatant Plug for Corwin Arms but I have to admit that Corwin sells a quality SSR mount.

I have a original CE42 SSR rifle that had the bottom half of the mount but was missing the upper half/scope. I bought one of Corwin's SSR repro mounts and the top half slid right on the original bottom mount. 10 minutes with a dremel to the locking lever and it looks great. Now I just need to find an original scope - at least until I can find an original top mount/scope matching pair.

Be careful about buying the scopes with the claws soldered on to them.
Your would be looking at lots of money to a REAL gunsmith who can cut , grind, silver solder the Claw bases which are not included, and re-blue the rifle.
Figure $1000+ if he knows his stuff. Base have to be meticulously aligned.
