Reaming for a rim fire liner

Ive turned old cooey barrels down to 11.2mm and then used them as a liner. A follow rest for the finishing pass. Leading upto that i do it in steps with maybe 6 inches out of the chuck at a time and use a center. If it starts to chatter in the middle its nerve racking as you hope the barrel doesnt ride up over your tool when its that thin and long.

I agree with your method, to me, it just not worth the effort unless no other option is available.

Nice lathe Dennis what's the bed length on that one. David.

48 inch bed, 11 inch swing... Rockwell stopped production about 1972-73 to go into the space industry... I think it is one of the finest gunsmithing lathes they made ... Sam Elliott bought it new in 72.

You lucky rascal, a 48" bed. I thought it looked longer than usual, what a perfect length for the gun trade. There's been many a time my 40 inch bed Logan has had me scratching my head wondering how I might get around an extended problem. D H

I remember Mick McPhee tapering a barrel for his 1886 Winchester on his 6" Atlas lathe. He mounted the tailstock on a block on his bench, turned half of the barrel, then flipped it around and turned the other half.
