Rear ghost ring sight..useless?

I tried. Spent some big $$ on slugs but it didn't get any better. Not even with a red-dot mounted on the action.
Best group was 4" at 50m with sights on the barrel but only once.
I must admit though, I always shoot offhand. My defender is meant for bear defense and my shoulder can only take so much slug practice. Benchrest never makes it. 5" at 25m is good enough for the purpose.

Good point. My gun is my training and hunting gun but I'm anal about knowing how accurate my guns can be. My best results have been with low recoiling slugs.

Benchresting a shotgun can be a painful experience!:)

For me personally I hate the ghost ring site.. they says it's faster etc but it seems like too much crap is blocking my site of view. It may just not work for you, maybe try a scope? You're not going to be shooting any tactical deer out there, it's all preference. Beads work fine as well, gets all my trap done. Can't get much quicker accurate shots than that.

There is your problem. You will never know how accurate the gun is without a good rest. Even if you never use the rest otherwise, it is necessary to find out what the true potential of the gun/ammo combination is.

And that is why a rest is essential.

For those that think a rear aperture sight is inherently poor, I can shoot just over 1 MOA at 200yds with my Garand using iron sights and I wouldn't say my eyes are very good, either. Learn to properly use the sights and you should find decent precision to go with the quick acquisition that they offer.

As already said above, you focus on the front sight and ignore the rear. Your eye will automatically center the front sight in the rear aperture and you just have to worry about putting the front where you want the slug to go.
